  1. 1. Cochlear Implants A cochlear Implant is “device which uses small amounts of electrical current to stimulate the auditory nerve. The brain interprets these signals as sound” (INERAID)
  2. 2. Research Question <ul><li>Is the development of Cochlear Implants the cause for the division of the death community over whether to stay deaf or become one of the hearing cultures? What are the moral, ethical, and psychological concerns that these technological advancements have produced? Or does this technology seek to advantage the deaf community by giving them a choice to hear? </li></ul>

  4. 4. Case Analysis: Interviewee’s <ul><li>Deaf grandmother- Lost her hearing at the an older age due to the illness of autoimmune disease which is called relapsing polycondritis. She proceeded to get surgery of obtaining a cochlear implant. </li></ul><ul><li>Deaf Classmate- Born Deaf but associates himself with the hearing world. He does not wish to proceed with the surgery because he identifies with himself as being deaf. </li></ul>

Conclusion <ul><li>The technology is positively helpful with the fact that it allowed certain form of communication between hearing and deaf such as: telephone typewriters (TTY), web cam, close caption, e-mailing, text messaging. The underlying issue is now it is starting to become personal. The resolution seems to be more of a disagreement between strong opposite viewpoints, which both seems to make valid points. </li></ul>
