  • Renal fascia covers the renal capsule
  • Reddish brown
  • Most of the nephrons are located within the cortex. Each kidney has over 1 million nephrons. All together there is almost 140 miles of filters and tubes in the two kidneys. Bowmans capsule- a double walled hallow capsuleGlomerulus- knotty ball of capillariesProximal convoluted tubule- twisted tubular branch coming from the Bowmans capsuleLoop of Henle- located in the medulla. Has a straight decending limb, a loop, and a striaght ascending limbDistal convoluted tubule- once the loop of henle returns to the cortexCollecting tubule- large straight tubule which empties into the renal pelvis

    1. 1. 4.01 Remember the structuresof the urinary system
    2. 2. What are the structures of the urinary system?4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system2
    3. 3.  Kidneys (2) Ureters (2) Bladder Urethra Urinary meatus4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system3
    4. 4. Kidneys Most important excretory organ• Bean-shaped• Located between peritoneum(abdomen) and the backmuscles (retroperitoneal)• Held in position by connectivetissue• Enclosed in an adipose capsule• Protected by the ribs• Right is lower than left due toliver4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system4
    5. 5. Kidneys External structures Renal capsule Renal hilum Internal structures Renal cortex Renal medulla Renal pelvis4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system5
    6. 6. External kidneyRenal capsule• encloses each kidney andits blood vessels• Mass of fat tissue (adipose)Renal hilum Indentation that gives thekidney its bean-shapedappearance4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system6
    7. 7. Internal kidney• Renal cortex Outer layer• Renal medulla Middle layer• Renal pelvis Innermost layer4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system7
    8. 8. Renal cortexComposed of millions ofmicroscopic functional unitscalled nephrons4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system8
    9. 9. Nephron Functional unit ofkidney• Renal corpuscle Bowman’s capsule Glomerulus• Renal tubule Proximal convolutedtubule Loop of Henle Distal convoluted tubule Collecting tubules4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system9Each kidney contains about1.3 MILLION nephrons!
    10. 10. Renal medulla Inner, striated layer RENAL PYRAMIDS arethe striated cones. Base of each pyramidfaces cortex, while apexempties into cuplikecavities calledCALYCES Renal columns Located betweenthe pyramids Cortical tissue4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system10
    11. 11. Renal pelvis• Funnel shapedstructure at thebeginning of the ureter4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system11
    12. 12. Ureters• Muscular tubeextending fromeach kidney to theurinary bladder• Lined by a mucousmembrane• 10-12” long4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system12Ureters
    13. 13. Urinary bladder• Hollow muscular organ• Located in pelvic cavity• Made of elastic fibers andinvoluntary muscles4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system13
    14. 14. Urethra• Connects the bladderto the outside of thebody Female 1-2” long Male 4-6” longUrinary meatus• Opening to the outsideof the body4.01 Remember the structures of the urinary system14FemaleMale
