2. Social Media
72% of all internet users are now on social media.
Social media is not just used by the younger generation; the two main
age categories that use social media are 18-29 year olds and 30-49 year
olds.
Facebook is the most popular social media site, followed by
YouTube then Twitter.
Instagram is the most popular social media used by the younger
generation.
Social media has grown over time as the most popular sites
used to be MySpace and Bebo and is now been
overshadowed by Facebook and Twitter.
3. Social Media & Bullying
These are the facts on how social media has affected the development of bullying and how it
has changed from being children calling each other names in the playground, to having to get
the police involved over “unknown” users writing death threats.
• 95% of social media-using teens that have witnessed cruel
behavior on social networking sites say that have seen others
ignoring the behavior.
• 1 in 6 parents know their child has been bullied via a social
media website.
• Only 1 in 10 victims will report the bullying to a parent or
another trusted adult.
• Girls are twice as likely to be the victim or the predator than
boys when involved in cyber bullying.
• More than 80% of teenagers use a cell phone regularly, which
therefore makes it the most common medium of cyber
bullying.
• Bullied Victims are 2 to 9 times more likely to consider
committing suicide.
• Exampled of known cyber bullying platforms are those like
Twitter, Instagram, Text Messaging, chat websites and of
course Facebook. (Facebook is said to have twice the amount
of bullying than any other social media website.)
4. How Has Social Media
Affected Cyber Bullying?
As the cyber bully grows more powerful with every new social media platform, people are
having to find more ways to be able to report incident that happen over the internet. Even
though you are able to report things on the social media website itself, many people say that
their reports have never been sorted out. This is a new problem as many schools and parents,
although they would like to help, haven't got the power to do anything about the problem – so
the police have to get involved. Every year there are thousands of new social media sites
created, which could be considered to some people as only knew places to get bullied. Some
sites are just created by computer enthusiasts, so there is no report button or contact
information for those who feel as if they are being mistreated.
Also, I believe that in many ways, cyber bullying can be a lot worse than your average school
bullying as people tend to forget that there is another person on the end of that computer –
and without having to actually see them in person, they can be a lot more harsh.
