Context <ul><li>Post modern – uses elements from soaps and other genres. </li></ul><ul><li>Contemporary – deals with pregnancy, date rape, relationships, depression, racism etc. Deals with problems which are in society at the moment. </li></ul><ul><li>Sees things from teenagers point of view (often seen through the filming, similar to thirteen. </li></ul><ul><li>A lot of adults have left concentrating more on the teenagers. </li></ul>

Context <ul><li>Compared to historical representations the girls are Post Feminists. </li></ul><ul><li>There was HollyOaks Crossing the line, and you could turn over to E4 for the next episode. If you had Sky or Freeview you could keep up with the show. </li></ul><ul><li>Reinforces the dominant position of girls in Soaps which is conventional to the genre. </li></ul><ul><li>Zeitgest </li></ul>
  4. 4. Representation <ul><li>Countertypes of men and women. </li></ul><ul><li>Girls – Male Gaze </li></ul><ul><li>Boys - female Gaze </li></ul><ul><li>Girls – mythical, femininity and pleasure. They are dominant. </li></ul><ul><li>Males – countertypes – sometimes not macho, breaks the stereotypes. Show their emotions, are caring and sensitive. </li></ul>

Representation <ul><li>Girls are more verbally aggressive compared to historical counterparts. </li></ul><ul><li>Although still constructed for a male viewer. </li></ul><ul><li>Girls are predatorial and have numerous powers of seduction. </li></ul><ul><li>Sometimes naive and easily manipulated by the males in the soap. </li></ul>

Audience <ul><li>Males and females. </li></ul><ul><li>Males for the male gaze and also deal with problems (uses and gratifications theory) </li></ul><ul><li>Females – Empowering the viewer, female gaze, deals with stereotypical issues which could affect the viewer in their everyday life. </li></ul>
