Case Study

 1. 1. Case Study Director Johan Renck
 2. 2.

Born Bo Johan Renck on December the 5 th 1966. A music and video Director who worked with stars such as Madonna, Kylie Minogue, The Libertines and many more.

By creating video for so many diverse music genres Johan’s give me many ideas and new camera shots to play with in my own video.

 3. 3. The Libertines- what became of the likely lads
 4. 4. Camera Work and Narrative

The shoots taken in this music video are meant to give a cheap, low budget and energetic feeling.

A Steadicam is used throughout the video to give clean crisp movements and allow us as the audience to feel as though we are involved in action. Almost like the third child in this pair of stereotypical working class lads.

 5. 5.

There is a clear relationship between the music and the visuals in this video. As the tempo of song increases so does the action on screen, these fast changes keeps the audience enthralled and make the actions flow.

Johan Renick also a mass amount of contrast. As he often used a few fast camera changes then slow mo to make a specific point or in the case of the libertines and specific action have a greater impact and meaning.

 6. 6. Lighting

In this video only natural light is used. Unlike most music videos the light is not bright and vibrant. Normally lights are used to make shots clear. In fact this video is the complete opposite so that the feeling of gloom a inevitable failure is created.

 7. 7. Kylie Minogue's -Love at First Sight
 8. 8.

As Kylie Minogue is a massive star the brief for her music video must have been very tight. We can see this as there is a lot of close ups during the video. Like most pop star this music video is all about the artist image and improve their star iconography.

 9. 9. Camerawork and Narrative

Firstly the video is almost one continuous shot. Therefore to retain the interest of the audience there are many dancers and special effects, such as the green screen used to created a strange techno environment.

Also these dancers work with Kylie to give the video energy and make Kylie look as talented as possible.

 10. 11. Lighting

Not much can be said about the lighting as it is not used to created effects or moods. It simply used primarily to make action clear and vibrant.

 11. 12. Bat For Lashes - Daniel
 12. 13. Camerawork and Narrative

At the very start of the music video a slow pan around artist is used to create suspense.

As the artist sing dancers in strange black outfits appear. These figures symbolise, guilt, lose, pain, sadness, etc.

As the action continues there are reverences to a lose of innocence or a corruption of some kind.

Also within the song there are reverences to burning and in the music video this is followed up with images of burnt objects. This therefore reinforces the idea of lose and pain.

 13. 15.

As the music video unfolds there a more and more shots of the dancers who dancer together or all around the artist. The set and costumes are very well thought out and extremely complicated. To make the audience watch a remain interested the action is continually slowed down then speed up.

 14. 16.

Later there are scene were the artist is driving a car. To give the illusion that the car is moving a blue or green screen is used this is enforced by passing trees. Also the dancers are on the car and a wind machine is used to give the false impression of movement.

 15. 17. Lighting

The lighting is used to create a dream like effect. This goes hand in hand with the strange dancers and unusual environment in which the music video is produced in. this combines with dramatic action to create an atmosphere of Loss and Pain.
