Weekend With Placentas: A Practical & Small Group Approach To Its Pathology

  1. 1. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:This course is designed using both lectures and workshop formats. Didactic lectures are paired with “hands on” slide review sessions (both individuallyand in groups at the microscope with the faculty).Placental pathology is a under-utilized and under-appreciated anatomic pathology specialty in which the knowledge gap in even senior experiencedpathologists is large. By improving the pathologic diagnostic acumen we expect improved education amongst the participants and their colleagues inobstetrics and pediatrics which should lead to improved care and management of mothers and babies. At the end of the course the participants should be comfortable with the placental examination and reporting. We aspire to stimulate a fresh look at theplacenta and to encourage new bonds between the pathologist and the clinicians upon the return to their own institutions.LEARNING/OBJECTIVES:Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:• Properly triage placentas for pathologic examination • Evaluate the clinical significance of their findings• Effectively perform a placental gross examination • Develop strong working relationships with the clinicians you consult withTARGET AUDIENCE:Anatomic pathologists, physicians, medical malpractice lawyers, obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine specialists, family practitioners, pediatricians, neonatologists, nurse midwives.ACGME COMPETENCIES:This course is designed to enhance the following ACGME competencies: • medical knowledge • patient careREGISTRATION INFORMATION:Tuition Fee — Physicians w/electronic syllabus — $750 (USD).
