  2. 2. Controversies & ConversationsinLaserandCosmeticSurgeryAn Advanced SymposiumAugust 9-11, 2013Each year sees the development of many new lasers andlight sources, skin tightening devices, relaxers, fillers, andother cosmetic interventions, each with proponents andopponents. The claims and disclaims that follow thedevelopment of these devices is often contradictory.Marketing often precedes the availability of goodinformation about their efficacy and risks. A faculty ofdistinguished speakers will present their views and developa consensus on many of these controversies and otheremerging areas. “Controversies” offers participants aunique opportunity to discuss these controversial topics in acollegial atmosphere with a large group of experts in thefield. This course will be of benefit to beginner and experiencedlaser and aesthetic surgeons, dermatologists, plasticsurgeons, otolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, oculoplasticsurgeons, and other health care personnel interested in thecurrent status of cutaneous and cosmetic surgery.LEARNING OBJECTIVESIdentify and manage the spectrum of cosmetic and functionalskin conditions treatable with energy-based devices.Determine optimum therapy of choice for noninvasivetreatment of pigmentary and vascular cutaneouslesions, photoaging, and face and body chronologic aging.Explain to patients the rationale for use of chosen laser oraesthetic surgical treatments, interpret what has been writtenin the scientific literature to wording understandable to alayperson, and recommend appropriate interventions for theirconcerns.FORMATThe controversial issue will be presented at the start ofeach discussion. Selected faculty members will then begiven a finite period of time to present their view. Otherfaculty will be asked to comment on the presentations. Thiswill be followed by an open discussion, led by Drs. Dover,Arndt, Anderson and Alam. Both the faculty, as well asmembers of the audience, will be encouraged to challengeeach other’s opinions in a lively, no holds barreddiscussion. The last presentation each morning will featurechallenging therapeutic problems and late breaking “HotTopics”. Participants and faculty are invited to bring alongslides of difficult cases. Throughout the seminar, there willbe ongoing discussions among the expert faculty and theparticipating clinicians about current trends and state-of-the-art techniques in cutaneous and aesthetic surgery.
