  • Using Social Media to Enhance Your Winery VisitA special #CountyTerroir conversation with Sherry Martin, Liz Lacey, Paul Battilana, and Shawn McCormickLet’s talk about Social Media tools and how you can use them to help you with your wine region visit. We’re going to keep this casual – so if you have a question, stop us and we’ll try to answer it. If it is coming up in the slides, I may defer the answer to then.
  • We’re luck to have a talented host of Panel Members with us today – I’m going to let each of them introduce themselves and maybe tell us which Social media tool you will find them most active on.Paul Battilana – winemaker at Casa Dea Estates Winery@PECWinemakerLiz Lacey – Retail, Sales, & Social Media Manager, Lacey Estate Winery@LaceyEstates804Sherry Martin – Director of Marketing, Karlo Estates @KarloEstatesShawn McCormick – Wine Blogger, Uncork Ontario@UncorkOntario
  • PAUL!
  • LIZ!
  • SHERRY!
  • SHAWN!Mention Uncork Ontario winery finder appMention #ONWineChat every Wednesday at 10PM ESTShould be pouring the first wine
  • Social Media tools – yes there are tons out there but we’re going to talk about just a couple of key ones – Twitter, Facebook, and InstagramWine 1 should be poured by now – check that everyone has a taste.PAUL!- should talk about the wine – see if we can get someone in the audience to describe the wine.
  • Almost all ON wineries on twitter, as well as many winemakers“Chat” style of conversation allows for quick updates/exchange of info/connection - Immediacy#ONWineChat and other hashtags to follow along conferences or events. Hopefully some of you saw the screen out in the main room with the rolling “#CountyTerroir” Twitter Stream. We all (PAUL LIZ SHERRY)- How people can use it to learn about the winery ahead of time- Letting the winery know you are running late for arrival at a winery- What you see as the power of Twitter
  • The few ON wineries not on Twitter or not active on Twitter have a Facebook account for the most partAllows for following/monitoring activities of your favouritewineries When you like a winery, your friends see it and helps spread the word for the wineriesAll (PAUL, LIZ, SHERRY)- What do the panel members see as the difference between the material they post on Facebook vs. Twitter- Pros & Cons- Any other points anyone wants to make
  • Why Instagram?Good question. Lots of other social photo sharing sites, but not many as popular as Instagram.Cool filters - the impact photos have on people, and ability to record momentsusing it to show your friends the cool places you visitALL (PAUL, LIZ, SHERRY) – any input on power of images?LIZ! – your wine should be poured by now – can you talk about it and again we will ask someone in the audience to describe it.
  • Yes, yes, yes. We’re not saying there are only the three we’ve covered. There are a lot of them and basically the rest of what we willtalk about applies to all of the sharing sites that you might be part of.
  • Planning Your VisitPAUL, LIZ, SHERRY – will be looking to you 3 to contribute some of the bullets here and or other anecdotes as discussed.Research the wineries in the area:Web sites, blogs, etc – find the winery sites, the tourism sites for the region, blog sites with reviews, etc. select the ones you want to visitFind them on Twitter, Facebook, etc. and follow them and start engaging Contact the wineries:Let them know the date and time you are coming on Twitter (or email, FB etc)Are you traveling in a group? Plan Tweetups at designated locations, meet new Twitter friends in person at the wineries
  • PAUL, LIZ, SHERRY – will be looking to you 3 to contribute some of the bullets here and or other anecdotes as discussed.Use Twitter to remind wineries when you are comingUpdate them! Wine touring always goes off schedule – let the wineries know when you are running late. Again – Twitter great for this.Record your experience – tweets, check-ins, photos
  • PAUL, LIZ, SHERRY – will be looking to you 3 to contribute some of the bullets here and or other anecdotes as discussed.Remember to thank all of the people who made your trip a success – wineries, restaurants, tour buses, hotels, etc. Thanking through social media like Twitter and Facebook appreciated by all – others get to see what a great experience you had.Use any of the tools you are comfortable with – most of these small businesses will appreciate the time you take to make reccomendations to others in different forums/tools.Keep following and engaging with the wineries. If you took wine home, update them as you open new bottles and relive your time in the CountySHERRY! Your wine should be poured by now. Again – tell them what is in their glass and ask an audience member to describe what they are tasting.
  • Story Time if required!PAUL, LIZ, SHERRY If we need to fill more time, we ask some general questions about social media.- Who's the most interesting person you met first on social media, then in real life?- Recently we have seen some crazy flame outs on social media (Amy’s Baking Company) -anyone ever have a bad experience with social media? - Do you ever find Twitter difficult in that it can mean 16 hour days of answering tweets?
  • As Shawn wraps up – need to thank Andrew Weber for many of the images in today’s presentation.
