Challenges for the Agricultural Development • High population growth rate (3.2%) • Degradation of natural resources as result of deforestation and overgrazing • Expansion of cultivation into unterraced steep slopes (>30%) • Soil loss due to rain and wind induced erosion (1.9 bn. tons of topsoil annually / 30,000 ha) • Reduction of soil fertility due to inadequate land management practices • Low agricultural productivity

GIZ support to SLM • Areas of Support: Strategy/Concept Advisory (Framework) SLM Watershed Development and Up Scaling Agricultural Extension for SLM • Personnel: 4 Seconded Experts 105 National Staff (42 Experts, 20 Admin, 43 Support) 8 Development Workers 1 Integrated Expert 1 Federal Office, 3 Regional Offices (Amhara, Oromia, Tigray)

Results achieved so far • 20,000 households apply SLM measures on private and communal land (e.g. erosion protection). • SLM measures applied on 35,000 ha of farmland. • 35,000 ha of forest are used in accordance with principles of sustainable forest management . • Multi-level approach links policy advice with direct implementation and vice versa. Increase of resilience against droughts and flooding.
