1. 1. A Revolution in Social Media
 2. 2. What is it?

YouTube is a website in which people create accounts so they can share self uploaded videos.

The website uses Adobe Flash player technology to play the videos, and literally anyone can post a video as long as there is no nudity, pornography, harassment, defamation, material that contains criminal conduct and commercial advertisements are forbidden.

The website is based in San Diego California and is a subsidiary of Google.

It was created by Jawed Karim, Steve Chen, and Chad Hurley.

 3. 3. Jawed Karim

He was one of the first founders of YouTube.

As a high school kid with an interest in computers, he created a email account for the schools faculty. The school had never used any kind of technology like this before.

Karim went on to Stanford University and worked for the electronic commerce system known as paypal which was adopted by eBay in 2002.

 4. 4. For what it’s worth….

Jawed Karim is personally worth $65 million because he was one of the first creators of YouTube.

YouTube was sold to Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion.

YouTube continues to grow in popularity and has become a major source of entertainment, communication, and self-promotion over the internet.

 5. 5. Celebrities have thrived because of YouTube.

YouTube is responsible for the recognition of such celebrities as Justin Bieber, Andy McKee, and many more.

Celebrities, politicians, and even religious leaders (Pope Benedict XVI) use accounts on YouTube for promotion of messages.

 6. 6. The Idea of YouTube.

In 2004 the tsunami in the Indian Ocean and the higher access to video cameras and cell phones to the everyday consumer sparked a video sharing craze on the internet.

This spark put the idea of a website like YouTube in high demand.

In the beginning though, Youtube was proposed as a dating website that utilized videos for self promotion.

Needless to say this idea did no take off at all.

 7. 7. Let the People Decide

Karim quickly learned that he should open up the site for all purposes and he took feedback from the users and he learned many things about what they wanted to have such as the search box at the top of the screen on the home page to choose which category of video the viewer wanted to see.

 8. 8. Timing.

Karim also stressed timing as one of the most important factors in the production and success of this website.

He said, “A website like this would not have been successful in 2003. Before 2004 you could not send videos through email because it required too much ‘bandwidth’. Broadband capability greatly increased the demand for YouTube because this made it easier to post videos.”

 9. 9. YouTube is easy to understand.

YouTube is very user friendly and it’s employee’s are always trying to find new ways to make the website easier, safer, more efficient, and consumer friendly. Here is a video that helps explain the system.

 10. 10. The End!

I hope you have come to appreciate YouTube and its contents as much as I have.
