Nanotubes

  1. 1. NANOTUBES
  2. 2. “Seamless cylindrical shells of graphiticcarbon which have novel mechanical andelectronic properties that suggest new highstrength fibers, submicroscopic test tubes, and perhaps, new semiconductormaterials”…..Thomas W. Ebbesen
  3. 3. History The discovery of multi-wallcarbon nanotubes was in 1991. Hydrogen storage innanotubes in 1997 The single-wallnanotubes werediscovered in 1993 Synthesis of nanotubepeapods in 1998
  4. 4. Technology The JSC Carbon Nanotube Project is focused ondeveloping bulk nanotube production, purification andapplication of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWNTs). The goal for their project is to develop nanotubeapplications for use in human space exploration. Carbon Nanotubes will be useful for miniaturizedelectronic, mechanical, electromechanical, chemicaland for scanning probe nano-devices, and materials formicroscopic composites.
  5. 5.  Carbon Nanotubes can be metallic orsemiconducting and offers amazingpossibilities to create futurenanoelectronic devices, circuits, andcomputers.
