  2. 2. Blog CommentingBlog commenting is very popular and a great source of backlinks. The process isstraightforward. Find a blog that is relevant to your website, find a post of interest, and post acomment. It is important to avoid posting spammy comments or you risk having yourcomments deleted, and potentially banned from blog networks such as Wordpress. It is simple enough to avoid spammy commenting. Just look at the blog from the point of viewof the blogger. They have spent their time writing something of interest and are eager to getrecognition for their efforts. As a commenter you have an opportunity to acknowledge theirefforts by contributing to the conversation. Demonstrate that you have read the post andexpand on the content in some way. While this technique is straightforward, it is not without its challenges. First, finding relevantblogs with sufficient authority to have an impact on your site can be problematic. Secondly, even if you do find appropriate blogs and use acceptable commenting practices, you only runabout a 50/50 chance of your comments being approved. This can happen for a variety ofreasons including the blogger not accepting comments, the blogger not finding yourcomments appropriate, or the blogger not reviewing their comments. The process can be frustrating , as you never know if your time is being well spent. There aretools available to help speed up the process. This Instant Backlink Magic review will give youinsight into how to overcome some of the downsides of blog commenting.Directory SubmissionsDirectory Submissions are an essential part of any successful backlink building campaign, especially if you are trying to compete in a highly competitive niche. A directory is a virtualyellow pages and there are tens of thousands of them on the internet. Directories serve animportant function on the internet. They allow searchers to find categorized lists of websites.Once again the process is straightforward. Find a directory, tell it what your website is about, identify an appropriate category, and submit your site. This technique also is not without its challenges. Although there are tens of thousands ofdirectories, many of them should be avoided. Webmasters of Directory sites are usuallyconcerned about the integrity of their own sites and institute a manual approval process sothey can screen out poor quality sites. This process contributes to their authority and in turnCopyright 2012 all rights reserved
  3. 3. provides valuable information to the search engines. The better the Directory site, the morelikely the chance of being placed on a waiting list for review. Sometimes you may only have towait a few hours, sometimes it could take months. Some directories require payment to be listed or to be placed in a priority approval queue. Asyou can imagine, search engines dont place any value on Directories who list sites based onfinancial gain. As such, avoid these Directories.Directories are not all alike. Some require short descriptions and long descriptions, some maycategorize sites differently, and some may have very unique criteria. Be prepared to haveseveral variations of your sites description available to accommodate the variousrequirements. With such a large workload, many Directories automatically reject a website ifthe submission is incomplete or incorrect. There are tools available to automate the submission process. However ,with the exception ofa couple of products costing $5,000 or more, all automated directory submission software hasinherent flaws. It is not possible for this kind of software to identify the unique requirements ofeach and every Directory. Therefore, the rejection rate tends to be very high. The expensive software justify their price because they actually monitor every directory intheir database, update criteria as necessary, remove inactive directories, and add new ones. However, unless you are in the SEO business, it is not likely worth the cost to purchase thissoftware.Directory Submissions can be one of the most frustrating backlink building techniques due tothe rejection rate and wait time involved. With patience, though, the rewards make itworthwhile.Article SubmissionsThis is a powerful method of getting backlinks. You submit unique articles with quality contentto any one of hundreds of article directories. One popular one is but thereare many excellent ones.As with Website Directories, not all Article Submission Directories are worth submitting to.Once you learn how to write the articles to meet the standards of the service, your articles willbe published, giving you a backlink as well as a traffic source and potential exposure as asubject matter expert. The main challenge for many people using this approach is having to continuously come upwith fresh quality content. This can be very time consuming. Some people try to shortcut thesystem and “spin” articles, or automatically rewrite articles for submission to differentCopyright 2012 all rights reserved
  4. 4. directories. There are products out there that can do this with varying degrees of success. Most products weve seen turn articles into gibberish. And then there is the dreadedCopyscape issue. Even if you are the original author of an article, a copy that has not beenproperly spun can be flagged by the search engines and your efforts are wasted or worseyour page or site can be de-indexed.Backlinks - What not to do?By now most webmasters have heard of GooglePanda. Panda is essentially a series of algorithmchanges designed to identify and lower rankings ofwebsites deemed to be low quality. One of theways they identify these sites is by analyzing theirbacklinks and weed out shady, questionable linkbuilding practices. The latest triumph for Google was the recentuncovering and de-indexing of a popular strategy called Homepage Pagerank Backlinks. Thisstrategy simply rented space on the homepages of websites with Pagerank to placebacklinks. Enterprising companies built networks of websites with Pagerank and offeredbacklinks throughout their networks. Problem is, homepages have limited real estate andwhen your link appears with hundreds or even thousands of other unrelated links Google getssuspicious. They ended up de-indexing entire networks of websites and as a result thebacklinks that were being rented to rank all the websites disappeared, effectively penalizingmany of those websites. This was a serious defeat for the SEO community as this method was the “in” strategy for thelast year or so. A great video summarizing the situation can be found here: HomepageBacklink Networks De-IndexedThere are many other backlink strategies that will either yield temporary results, no results, orworse penalize websites. Here is a rundown of some of the more popular ones:Link FarmsLink Farms are groups of websites that all link to each other through reciprocal links. Usuallywhat happens is many unrelated links end up on the same pages, and all of the participatinglinks offer no real value to the search engines. These practices are becoming easier to detectby the search engines and there are cases where simply placing an outbound link to the farmhas resulted in the linking site being banned.Copyright 2012 all rights reserved
  5. 5. Spammy LinksThese are links that are built from sites unrelated to the subject of a page, or are placedinappropriately within a page. It also applies to excessive linking from blogs or socialnetworking sites. The source sites are relatively easy to detect by the search engines andeventually they get de-indexed. To a webmaster the links end up coming and going, potentially raising the suspicion of the search engines. One day a site has 1,000 links. A weekor two later they have 500 links. This is an unnatural occurrence that can get a website introuble. Wikipedia has an interesting article on the history of spam for those interested.Forum LinksThis is another very popular technique because many forums have high Pagerank due to thenature of a forum – continuous fresh content. Forum links are links built by creating anaccount on a forum, then placing the backlink usually within the signature of the account. Thiscan be done quickly and lists can be purchased for as little as $5 to identify high PR forums. The problem with this method is, unless you plan on actively participating in the forum, youare essentially piggybacking on the hard work done by the webmasters of these forums. These types of backlinks end up disappearing as inactive accounts are deleted from theforums. Once again a website runs the risk of the search engines detecting unusual increasesand decreases in backlinks and the website may get penalized for this.Link WheelsLink Wheels are backlinks created by linking one website to another, then linking the secondwebsite to the third site, and so on until a wheel is formed. Each of the websites in the wheellinks back to your site. The theory on this approach is that link juice is passed to each of thesites enhancing the value of all of the links. The downside of this approach is an obviousfootprint is left that the search engines are able to detect and once again an unnatural patterncan be found, leading to penalties, bans, devaluation, etc.Copyright 2012 all rights reserved
  6. 6. Where Do You Turn? All of these techniques have one thing in common – they add novalue to the search engines results. These and other practicesexist because they are easy to set up and sell by SEO companiesto unsuspecting webmasters. Often it is difficult or impossible toidentify whether these practices are being used until it is too late. One day you are feeling great because your Google ranking issolid and business is coming in. The next day you have lost your rank and business dries up.There are ways to avoid all of the problems identified in this article: lost links, duplicatecontent, high risk strategies, wasting money on useless software. If you create your linksproperly in the first place you will never have to worry about being penalized. Depending onthe niche you are competing in, you may not even need very many links. The problem manywebmasters face, though, is the proper techniques are the ones that take the most time toimplement and creating even a small number of links can take a considerable chunk out ofyour days, weeks, or even months. For many webmasters this is just not practical.Fortunately there are ways to simplify even the safest techniques and reduce or eliminatealtogether the time needed to implement them.
