Mr Youth's Youth4Youth Project

  1. 1. Knowing bigger brains can achieve bigger things, Mr Youth is teaming up with our friends, family and clients to empower the next generation of young minds. This holiday season, we are working to provide youth in another part of the world with educational opportunity – a gift we can give ourselves to. We ask that you help us reach our goal, so we can help these young students reach theirs. Here’s how…
  2. 2. 3 Youth for Youth Holiday Fundraiser ASSIGNMENT Work with clients, friends and family to help support youth in another part of the world with the same educational opportunities, tools and mentorship that encouraged our own success and creative spirit. GOAL - Raise $25,000 for Pencils of Promise to build a one-room preschool in the village of Pa Suk, Laos. - Collect educational supplies to support all of the village’s school children. TIMING November 15 - December 15, 2010
  3. 3. 5 THE EDUCATION CRISIS >75 million children in the world live without a pre-school education. >These children miss out on the opportunity to develop talents, improve lives and contribute to societal development. WHY EDUCATION? >A child is 40% more likely to live past the age of five if its mother has had a basic education. >At least 700,000 new cases of HIV could be prevented each year if all the children in the world had a classroom to study in. >For each additional year of secondary school, an individual’s wages increase by 15–25%.
  4. 4. WHO IS PENCILS OF PROMISE? A passionate community of individuals collectively creating a non-profit that empowers each person, regardless of status or position, to make a positive impact on the world. Together, they build sustainable schools, partnerships and solutions to enable basic education for underserved children in the developing world.
  6. 6. WHO IS MR YOUTH? One of Fast Company’s Top 10 Most Innovative Advertising/Marketing Companies, fueled by a growing team of Millennials and young leaders. We play hard, but we work harder. We know how lucky we are to do what we do. That’s why we inject a give-back element into the DNA of our agency: from painting local schools, to digging a well in Ethiopia, to working in our neighborhood soup kitchen; we have instilled this value in our ver. We are passionate, creative, dedicated and educated, and we’re excited to share the love.
  7. 7. OUR SCHOOL Village: Pa Suk District: LPB Location: North of LPB KM: 4 KM Ethnicity: Lao Lum, Hmong, Khmu Families: 267 Population: 1,356 Occupation: Farmer, Construction, Gov’t Crops: Vegetables Water: Yes Electricity: Yes Average Income $500 Pa Suk is located on the outskirts of Luang Prabang City proper. It is a very large village with a strong educational infrastructure, the educators at Pa Suk boast of their high attendance rates and test scores in the 90th percentile of the national average. On the first Pencils of Promise visit to Pa Suk, every classroom was filled with active and attentive students. The walls were covered in student work that portrayed a variety of skills form art to math to science.
  8. 8. OUR SCHOOL Proposed Start Date: Nov. 2010 > One-room preschool >General support structure, including an assigned Village Coordinator. Since Pa Suk is very accessible and has a firm educational infrastructure, it will be an ideal site to continue to pilot any new structures in student tracking / monitoring and evaluation practices. Pencils of Promise will have the unique ability to easily track students from the Pa Suk community before, during, and after their schooling tenure.
  10. 10. THE CHILDREN Pha Theung has 61 eligible preschool-aged children. These children often spent their days unsupervised while their parents worked, and they had no access to the building blocks of a basic education. By the time they are able to attend school, they will already be at a significant disadvantage. With preschool education available to them, they are now able get a jumpstart on their cognitive development, motor skills, and language skills, which will ultimately empower them toward a higher quality of life. THE SCHOOL PoP broke ground on the Pha Theung Preschool in late March 2009. All of the materials and labor came from the village itself. After three months of hard work, in early July 2009, the first Pencils of Promise School was completed. For just over $18,000 (which includes three years maintenance, materials, and teacher salary for two years), the village had its first building with running water and electricity. Thirty-five children now attend the school in its inaugural year, providing them with the foundation they need to continue on the path of a successful education. CASE STUDY: PHA THEUNG
