Definitions• Piracy-The unauthorized use or reproduction of copyrighted or patented material• Copyright- Exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute material and form of something• Counterfeit- imitation of product and its box• Forgery- adapting the product with intent to deceive• Bootlegging- recording made of live performances without performers consent• Plagirism: copying of someone else’s work
  3. 3. Legal sources of downloading• Pressplay• Rhapsody• Musicnet• Apple Itunes- .99 cents per song• Napster- $12.95 per month• Spotify
  4. 4. Copyright laws • Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)- stop online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods • Protect IP act- protect the property that you make, or have rights to so that others don’t steal it
  5. 5. Lost sales due to downloading• Drop in cd sales, in 2000 era, P2P (peer to peer) downloading affected• Statistics show loss of 70 thousand+ jobs in 2005 (How Does Downloading Music Affect the Economy)• Tax revenues decreased insurmountably
