  2. 2. What it did<br />On December 2, 1823, President James Monroe declared that no country could colonize an already existing independent nation in the western hemisphere.<br />This included that Britain could not get involved with any land in North or South America.<br />
  3. 3. Why it happened<br />The Americans did not have the funds after the Revolutionary War to go back into war so they made this statement to keep peace.<br />The British were also taking American trade ships and stealing the goods. <br />The war of 1812 was also a factor due to the impact on the Americans from the French and English fighting.<br />
  4. 4. Why it was important<br />The doctrine caused peace among already existing nations.<br />America’s ships and land were safe from being taken by the British<br />
