Many lawmakers are apprehensive about possible environmental
damage caused by fracking. Here are three such concerns.
Water contamination. As of 2015, a study conducted by the EPA
confirmed the presence of toxic chemicals in groundwater sources
around several fracking sites. Though the report concluded
contamination was not a widespread issue, methane gas, as well
as other carcinogenic chemicals, have been found in higher
concentrations in drinking water near areas where fracking takes
place.

3.  Earthquakes. Disposal wells created during the
fracking process may incite earthquakes, as the
leftover, chemical-saturated water sits beneath the
earth’s surface. Some experts report that the
pumping of this excess water into faults below
ground can cause the faults to slip, resulting in
manmade earthquakes.
Waste of resources. Fracking requires large sums
of fresh water, calling for 1 million to 8 million
gallons to complete the average fracking job.
Reports also show that in 2015, the amount of
water used for fracking had increased to over 28
times the amount used on such jobs in 2000.
