He began training at the School of
Fine Arts in 1878.
He finished his studies there in
1881.
4. HIS LIFE IN
1884 Sorolla received a second medal at the
National Exhibition of Fine Arts and the
Provincial Council of Valencia paid him a
pension in Italy. 1878-1881 His first years
of studies were at the Academy of San
Carlos. 1884-1892
5. STYLEA trip to Paris in 1894 put him in touch
with Impressionist painting, which was
a true revolution in his style.
7. Clotilde García del Castillo was born in Valencia in
1865.
Joaquín Sorolla and Clotilde met as teenagers.
Joaquin was a friend of Juan Antonio, Clotilde's older
brother. Eventually, they got married in Valencia in
1888.
8. CHILDREN
In 1890 his first daughter, María Clotilde, was born.
In 1892, in November, Joaquín, his second son, was
born in Valencia.
While Sorolla traveled to Paris in 1895, Clotilde
returned to Valencia to give birth to their third daughter,

The sculptors Mariano Benlliure and José Capuz.
Mariano Benlliure lived close to Joaquín Sorolla, in
José Abascal street. Both were almost the same age;
Joaquín was one year older than Mariano, and both
were born in Valencia.
10. PLACES WHERE THEY LIVED AND
SPENT THE SUMMER
In 1905, the painter bought a plot in Paseo del Obelisco,
Madrid.
In 1909, he asked the architect Enrique María de Repullés
y Vargas to design the project.
His former house is now the Joaquín Sorolla museum,
where most of his works are shown. He used to spend the
summer in Valencia.
11. CURIOSITIE
SJoaquín Sorolla could be defined as the painter of
number 3 because when one year finishes in that
digit, the anniversary of his birth and death is held.
