Compliance Schedule <ul><li>BIMCO Guidance to Members on Installing BNWAS systems </li></ul><ul><li>Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm Systems </li></ul><ul><li>Members are reminded about the amendments to SOLAS Chapter V, regulation 19 - Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm Systems (BNWAS). </li></ul><ul><li>BNWAS will become mandatory for all new ships upon delivery, and existing ships will be required to retrofit the equipment “at the first survey”, in accordance with the application schedule set out below, based on ship type, Gross Tonnage (GT) and keel laying date. </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>Although the “first survey” may not concur with a dry docking, owners should note that considerable work might be required for retrofitting this equipment, which could take the ship out of service. </li></ul><ul><li>Consideration should therefore be given to carrying out the necessary modifications in dry dock before the mandatory implementation date. The agreement of the ship’s flag administration would be required to postpone retrofitting beyond this date. </li></ul>Compliance Schedule
  8. 8. <ul><li>Two types of systems used: </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>with a push button re-set function </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>activity sensor to monitor for bridge inactivity </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>DMA carried out a survey of BNWAS systems used on Danish flagged vessels </li></ul><ul><ul><li>For systems with a re-set button many false alarms were generated </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>These systems were seen as a source of irritation/stress </li></ul></ul>Danish Survey
  9. 9. <ul><ul><li>For systems with an activity sensor there were few false alarms generated </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>These systems were felt to be a source of re-assurance </li></ul></ul><ul><li>From the answers it was concluded systems with only a re-set button should be avoided </li></ul><ul><li>Systems should include an activity sensor to reduce stress and inconvenience to the Officer of Watch </li></ul>Danish Survey
  10. 10. <ul><li>The system must Monitor that the OOW is present on navigation bridge </li></ul><ul><li>Series of warning lights and audible Alarms must be produced </li></ul><ul><li>Operational when ships heading/track control is working </li></ul><ul><li>1 st level alarm for the OOW on bridge to acknowledge </li></ul><ul><li>2 nd level for the Captain and/or officer cabins </li></ul><ul><li>3 rd level common areas </li></ul><ul><li>Any alarm can only be re-set from the bridge itself </li></ul><ul><li>3 modes of operation: Automatic, On, Off </li></ul>MSC 75/24/add.1
  11. 11. <ul><li>There must be provision of an emergency call press button </li></ul><ul><li>System set up options must be security protected </li></ul><ul><li>Power failure must be indicated </li></ul><ul><li>If the system is tampered with this must be indicated </li></ul><ul><li>Operational mode of the system should be indicated </li></ul><ul><li>Inputs should be available from other bridge equipment that can generate an alarm signal. </li></ul><ul><li>Outputs should be available to bridge audio, VDR (IEC-62616) </li></ul><ul><li>Power failure signal has to be sent to IAS if available </li></ul>MSC 75/24/add.1

Captain decides </li></ul><ul><li>If exceeded a warning light flashes on panel for 15 secs </li></ul><ul><li>Then a continuous warning light and Level 1 audible Alarm generated for a further 15 secs on panel – optional VDR </li></ul><ul><li>Then the Level 2 warning light on panel and audible alarms generated– Captain/officers cabins, optional VDR </li></ul><ul><li>Then Level 3 warning light on panel and audible alarms generated- common areas, optional VDR </li></ul><ul><li>The period of time between level 2 and level 3 alarms can be between 90-180 secs. (8 max) – Not LR </li></ul><ul><li>- Select how many re-set buttons?
