Introduction to polygons

  1. 1. Polygons
  2. 2. A polygon is a closed plane figure with 3 or more sides (all straight lines, no curves).
  3. 3. ELEMENTS OF A POLYGON. Side: straight line segment. Vertex or corner: point where two sides meet. Angle: aperture of two adjacent* segments that meet in a corner. Diagonal: segment that connects two non adjacent* corners * Adjacent: adjacents, un al costat de l'altre
  4. 4. ELEMENTS OF A POLYGON. Vertex Side Diagonal Angle
  5. 5. A polygon is a 2D shape defined by the number of sides. It is a flat figure. Polygons have straight sides and can be regular or irregular: ~ Regular polygons: all angles and all sides are equal. ~ Irregular: when all the sides or angles are not equal.
  6. 6. REGULAR IRREGULAR
  7. 7. REGULAR POLYGONS A Regular Polygon is a polygon in which all sides are the same length. Equilateral Triangle  Pentagon   Square  Hexagon
  8. 8. PERIMETER OF A POLYGON Perimeter is the distance around a twodimensional shape. It's the addition of the length of all sides. 5 cm 5 cm 5 cm 5 cm Perimeter: 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20 The perimeter of this shape is 20cm
  9. 9. CLASSIFYING POLYGONS BY THE NUMBER OF SIDES.
  10. 10. 3 sided Polygon: Triangle Hint: Think “Tri”cycle, “tri”pod, “Tri”lateration (Tri means 3)
  11. 11. 4 sided Polygon: Quadrilateral
  12. 12. 5 sided Polygon: Pentagon
  13. 13. 6 sided Polygon: Hexagon
  14. 14. NUM. OF SIDES NAME 3 Triangle 4 Quadrilateral 5 Pentagon 6 Hexagon 7 Heptagon 8 Octagon 9 Nonagon 10 Decagon 11 Hendecagon 12 Dodecagon
