32. “A Fund Raising
Tractor Tale”
The Newberry Lions Club sponsored frequent fund
raisers, such as raffling off guns, farm equipment and
the like. In the mid 40’s, the club ran one of the most
memorable raffles. The grand prize was a brand new
John Deere “model B” tractor # 237277.
As was often the case, each lion was responsible
for selling or if unable for purchasing a certain
number of tickets. With an appealing prize, some of
the lions decided to hold on to their tickets in hopes of
winning the tractor themselves.
33. One such lion was E.D. ‘Shine” Norfleet, who kept a
substantial number of tickets for himself. However he
let a Mr. Nettles from High Springs purchase one of his
ticket. It turned out to be the winning ticket. “Shine”
claimed he sold the wrong ticket.
Mr. Nettles eventually gave the tractor to Lumus
Hagen, who then in turn gave it to his brother Nolan
Hagen. Nolan Restored the vintage tractor and sold it to
Roger Alexson of Ormond Beach.

38. The Health Clinic
In the late 1950’s, the Newberry Lions Club provided
funding to enable a branch of the Alachua County
Health Clinic to operate in Newberry. The clinic
originally operated out of the women’s center.
Through the generous effort of the James Bryant
Smith family, Two lots were deeded to the club. The lots
are located on state road 26 in Newberry.
The club persuaded the Alachua County
Commissioners to donate a portable building to be
placed on the lots for use by the clinic. The club
maintained the facility with Major help from the
Newberry FFA chapter. In about 1985 the clinic closed.
It operated for a period of 25 years.

116. First Woman Member
Hooper Gravely
sponsored the first
woman to be a
member of the
Newberry Lions Club.
This was the beginning
of a new look for the
club. Not to mention
the way women who
followed added a new
vitality to the club.
117. 1st Farm Toy Show
Lion Don Davis was elected president. He
was a relative new comer with fresh ideas. He
organized and promoted the first farm toy show.
It was an immediate success and became the
clubs biggest fund raiser and has continued to
be over the years.
The Newberry Future Farmers joined in
support of the project, furnishing the man
power for the table setups necessary for the
displays. The first show was held in the
Newberry High School Gym.

123. 1st Newsletter
Lion president Don Davis gives the club
another first; The clubs first newsletter.
Beginning in the early fall of 1991 the
newsletter was published by lion president Don
Davis and printed monthly by Lions Joy and
John Glanzer, at their print shop. This was
continued for several years.
In 1995, Lion president Jack Varnon took
up the task of publishing the newsletter. He also
repeated the process in 2000. Joy and John
Glanzer continued to do the printing.

228. A Blind Girl “Sees”
Lion president Jack Varnon took the lead in searching for a
way to provide Norissa Thornburg with the latest computer
hardware and software technology for the blind.
With the help of the foundation for the blind this was
accomplished. Norissa is a blind woman who attended Newberry
high school.
This is no ordinary computer. It includes “jaws” software
and a braille printer. The “jaws” software (Seach Accesss Screen
Reader) allows the blind operator to hear wht a sighted person
would see on the monitor. The braille printer prints in braille so
that the blind person can read by touch although it also functions
as a normal printer.
Norissa will also have acess to the world of the internet.
Just think of all the information that is at her finger tips. To Lion
Jack Varnon, a job well done.
