ประวัติความเป็นมา ในสมัยปี 1901 หอสมุดแห่งชาติออสเตรเลียยังคงเป็นเพียงห้องสมุดรัฐสภาออสเตรเลีย จากนั้นในปี 1927 ที่หอสมุดถูกย้ายจากเมลเบิร์นที่เมืองแคนเบอร์รากับในตึกของรัฐสภาออสเตรเลีย ต่อมาในปี 1960 อาคารของรัฐสภาออสเตรเลียหลังเก่าได้ถูกเปลี่ยนให้เป็นห้องสมุดรัฐสภา และได้แบ่งพื้นที่ส่วนหนึ่งในการสร้างหอสมุดแห่งชาติออสเตรเลียซึ่งหมายถึงหลังปัจจุบันนี้ ซึ่งที่ทำอาคารหอสมุดแห่งนี้ถูกสร้างขึ้นชายฝั่งทะเลสาบ Burley Griffin ที่สร้างเสร็จในเดือนสิงหาคม 1968 หลังจากนั้นหอสมุดแห่งชาติออสเตรเลียก็จัดบริการให้กับประชาชนภายใต้ข้อบังคับของพระราชบัญญัติหอสมุดแห่งชาติปี 1960 ในปี 2001 หอสมุดแห่งชาติออสเตรเลีย มีการฉลองครบรอบโดยทางหอสมุดแห่งชาติออสเตรเลียได้จัดทำเป็นหนังสือที่มือชื่อว่า “ Remarkable Occurrences : The National Library of Australia’s First 100 Years 1901-2001”

Books are made available through the catalogue and may be used in the various reading rooms or requested on interlibrary loan through our document supply service.

Australian & General Collection ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Journals (sometimes also called serials or periodicals) are considered to be publications which come out at regular or irregular intervals - magazines, newsletters, annual reports, newspapers etc. and are produced by all segments of Australian society - academic, ethnic and multicultural, aboriginal, businesses, clubs and societies, schools government departments, professional associations etc. Including newspapers, the Library holds over 175,000 journal titles of which 44,000 are current

There are over 400 current Australian titles and more than 250 current overseas titles. Newspapers are available in a variety of formats: - Paper - Microform - Electronic

The aim is to support the preservation of dance materials, to document dance in Australia, and to provide access to dance-related information for all Australians.

Its strengths are in retrospective and contemporary Australiana, including printed music, published and unpublished scores, and archival sound recordings of folk song and dance traditions in Australia.

Australian & General Collection ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],The more than 200,000 post 1900 Australian maps in the collection provide comprehensive coverage of topographic mapping published by the national and state mapping authorities. As well as standard topographic series at large, medium and small scales (in metric and imperial measures), a wide range of thematic maps including soils, geology, population etc. are held. County and parish maps, electoral maps and census maps are particular strengths of the collection.

The Library has also brought together a significant quantity of folklore field tapes, following the post-war folk culture revival in Australia. In recent years a substantial number of interviews in the field of social history have been added, contributing to a balanced national collection of some 40,000 hours of oral history and folk recordings.

New acquisitions are catalogued as they arrive. The Library’s pictorial collection is gradually being digitized and there are presently over 74,000 images available through the Pictures Catalogue and Picture Australia service on the Internet. As a supplement to the Pictures Catalogue, selected collections are listed or summarized in caption lists and finding aids.

Collection items (16mm prints, video tapes and DVDs) previously associated with this service have been integrated into the National Collection. They remain searchable and available for loan.
