Climate and Vegetation

  1. 1. CLIMATE
  2. 2. Weather Is a moment’s view of the lower atmosphere - Elements: temperature, wind and precipitation are recorded at specified moments in time - By finding trends in data that have been gathered over an extended period of time - we can speak about typical conditions These characteristic circumstances describe the climate of a region.
  3. 3. Climate Is the description of typical weather conditions in an area or at a place over a period of time.
  4. 4. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type  Temperature and Precipitation TROPICALTropical Rain Constant high temperature Forest Rainfall heavy all year High amount of cloud cover High humidity
  5. 5. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type  Temperature and Precipitation TROPICALSavanna High temperature Rainfall heavy in summer high- sun period Dry in winter low-sun period Monsoon: highest temperature Just before rainy season
  6. 6. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type  Temperature and Precipitation SEMIDESERT AND DRYLAND Hot deserts Extremely high temperature in summer Very little rainfall Low humidity
  7. 7. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type  Temperature and Precipitation SEMIDESERT AND DRYLAND Steppe Warm to hot summers Cold winters Some rainfall in summer Some snowfall in winter
  8. 8. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type  Temperature and Precipitation HUMID MIDLATITUDE Mediterranean Warm to hot summers Mild to cool winters Dry summer Generally low humidity
  9. 9. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type  Temperature and Precipitation HUMID MIDLATITUDE Humid Hot summers subtropical Mild winters Showers in summer
  10. 10. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type  Temperature and Precipitation HUMID MIDLATITUDE Marine West Westerly winds year- round Coast Mild summers Cool to cold winters Low rainfall in summer
  11. 11. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type  Temperature and Precipitation HUMID MIDLATITUDE Humid Hot to mild summers Continental Cool to very cold winters Showers in summer Snowfall in winter
  12. 12. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type  Temperature and Precipitation ARCTIC AND SUBARCTIC Subarctic, Cool to cold, short summers Tundra Extremely cold winters
  13. 13. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type  Temperature and Precipitation ARCTIC AND SUBARCTIC Ice cap Dry climates with some summer and winter precipitation
  14. 14. CLIMATE CHARACTERISTICS Climate Type Temperature and Precipitation Highlands Great variety of conditions based on elevation, prevailing winds, sun or non- sun facing slopes, latitude, valley or non- valley, ruggedness
  15. 15. Natural Vegetation The plants that would exist in an area if people did not modify or interfere with the growth process.
  16. 16. VEGETATION TYPE TROPICAL RAIN FOREST In the hotter parts of the world, where rainfall is heavy and well scattered throughout the year SAVANNA VEGATATION When tropical rainfall is seasonal, savanna vegetation occurs, characterized by a low grassland with occasional patches of forest or individual trees
  17. 17. VEGETATION TYPE MEDITERRANEAN OR CHAPARRAL VEGETATION Found in the hot summer and mild, damp winter midlatitudes. This type of vegetation consists mainly of shrubs and trees of limited size. SEMIDESERT AND DESERT VEGETATION Is made up of dwarf trees, shrubs and various types of cactus, although in gravelly and sandy areas, virtually no plant exist.
  18. 18. VEGETATION TYPE PRAIRIE OR STEPPE These are extensive grasslands, usually growing on high humus content soils. DECIDUOUS WOODLANDS When rainfall is higher in temperature areas, the leaves fall during this season.
  19. 19. VEGETATION TYPE CONIFEROUS FORESTS Northerly regions that have mild summers and very cold winters TUNDRA VEGETATION A complex mix of very low growing shrubs, mosses, lichens, and grasses
