Named after Saint Valentine, an earlyChristian martyrLegend has it that Valentine was a priestwho served during third century Rome. There was an Emperor at that time by thename of Claudius II. Emperor Claudius IIdecided that single men made bettersoldiers than those that were married. Withthis thought in mind he outlawed marriagefor young men in hopes of building astronger military base. Supposedly,Valentine, decided this decree just wasntfair and chose to marry young couplessecretly. When Emperor Claudius II foundout about Valentines actions he sentencedhim to death and threw him in jail.
Saint Valentine• While the priest was imprisoned, waiting for his execution, many young couples threw notes of thanks along with flowers and other gifts into the window of his cell. Among these young people who admired the priest for doing the right thing was the prison guards own daughter. Her father allowed her to visit Valentine in his cell. During these visits, the two would talk and laugh and share each others thoughts. Finally, the day arrived when Bishop Valentine was scheduled to die on the 14th of Feb. While he was waiting for the soldiers to come and drag him away, Bishop Valentine composed a note to the girl telling her that he loved her. He signed it simply, "From Your Valentine."
