Baptism ritual structure and symbols

  1. 1. Symbols and signs used in a baptismal ceremony include water, white garment, oil of chrism, sign of the cross and a lighted candle.
  2. 2. Baptism Ritual Structure 1. While standing at the back of the church the parents and child are welcomed by the priest who then invites them to come forward to the baptismal font.
  3. 3. 2. The celebration of the Word by the reading of a scripture then takes place. ~Jesus replied, "Truly I say to you: No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and of the spirit- (John 3:5)
  4. 4. 3.A sermon is sometimes preached. 4.Prayers are put forward at this time. 5. The priest prays for the baby to be delivered from sin and is anointed with the oil of catechumens

  6. 6. 7. The baby is baptized by the pouring of water over the head. The priest says " (Name..), I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit amen.
  7. 7. 8. For a second time the baby is now anointed with Chrism. 9. The baby wears a white garment which represents new life.
  8. 8. 10. The Easter candle which symbolises the resurrected Christ is then lit. 11. The ceremony concludes with the Lord's prayer and a blessing.
