Effects of being a teenage mom <ul><li>Being a teenage mom can </li></ul><ul><li>bring several consequences! </li></ul><ul><li>Going to school with the baby </li></ul><ul><li>Work and go to school </li></ul><ul><li>Finding day care </li></ul><ul><li>Being able to afford caring for the baby </li></ul><ul><li>Sometimes being a single mom </li></ul>
  3. 3. Over 2/3 of teenagers who have a baby while being in school will not graduate from high school!!!
  4. 4. Child abuse with teenage moms <ul><li>It is 80% more likely for child abuse to happen when the parents are teenagers because they don’t know the role of being parents. </li></ul><ul><li>They are very inexperienced </li></ul>
  5. 5. Yearly teenage pregnancies in the U.S. <ul><li>4 in 10 young women get pregnant each year </li></ul><ul><li>Nearly one million women are under the age of 20 </li></ul><ul><li>2,800 underage women are getting pregnant every day </li></ul>

Fatality Rates <ul><li>An estimated 1,400 children died from child abuse in 2002 </li></ul><ul><li>17% of child abuse fatalities are from shaken baby syndrome </li></ul><ul><li>It is said that 50-60% of child abuse fatalities are not recorded </li></ul><ul><li>Most of these victims are children of teenage parents </li></ul>
  7. 8. Children of teen mothers have a greater risk of poverty, behavioral problems, poor academic performance , and a higher risk in becoming a teenage parent themselves
  8. 9. Drinking During Pregnancy <ul><li>1 in 12 women drink while they are pregnant. 1 in 30 women have more than five drinks on one occasion. </li></ul><ul><li>Between 1,000 and 6,000 babies are born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in the U.S. per year. </li></ul>

Taking in Drugs While Pregnant <ul><li>4% of all pregnant women do drugs while pregnant. </li></ul><ul><li>The more drugs taken, the higher the risk is of the infant having health and birth defects. </li></ul><ul><li>A fetus that is exposed to drugs while in the womb also has a high risk of getting HIV, and may even end up having the sudden infant death syndrome. </li></ul>
