Muscular System

 1. 1. Muscular System

Muscular system : enables the body to move.

Muscle:

is an organ that can relax and

contract to allow movement.

It always pulls on bones

We have approximately 600 Muscles.

 2. 2. Muscle control

Voluntary muscles :

Can be controlled

Ex. Arm and legs muscles etc.

Involuntary muscles:

Can not be controlled consciously.

 3. 3. Types of Muscles

There are three types of muscles

1. Skeletal muscles

muscles that move bones.

They are voluntary.

2. Smooth muscles :

Found in internal organs such as

intestines, gall bladder and blood

vessels. They are involuntary.

 4. 4. Types of Muscles (Cont.)

3. Cardiac muscles

Found only in the heart.

They are involuntary.

 5. 5. skeletal muscles are striated, or striped.
 6. 6. Human smooth muscle is composed of slender, spindle-shaped cells.
 7. 7. Cardiac muscle
 8. 8. Muscles work together

Skeletal muscles work in pairs. When

one contracts, its partner relaxes.

To lower your arm, the biceps relaxes.

The triceps contracts then the arm goes

down.

To raise your arm, the biceps contracts which pulls on your arm bone. The triceps relaxes and allows the bone to be pulled up.
