  2. 2. Coming from Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, at 176 km north, lies the municipality of Brasov, the seat of the county with the same name, first certified by documents in 1234. . The county of Brasov, lying in the central part of Romania, within the Carpathian arc, covers a surface of 5,351 sq. km, that is 3.2% of the whole surface of Romania, boasting a most varied relief, from plains to the highest mountain peak in the country (2,543 m). 2
  3. 3. The population counts over 500,000 inhabitants, 2.8 % of Romania’s population. It features 9 towns, the municipality of Brasov, with over 300,000 inhabitants, being its capital; there are 48 communes, including 150 villages. 3

COUNTY SCHOOL INSPECTORATE • The County School Inspectorate is an institutional structure, subordinated to the Ministry of National Education. • It has an administration council and an advisory board. • The administration council is made up of the general inspector , 2 deputies, 5 inspectors, the head of the Teaching Staff Centre, the chief accountant and the legal counselor. • The advisory board is made up of heads of education units, other prominent teachers, representatives of pupils, parents, representatives of the local public administration, social partners. 6

FUNCTIONS OF THE COUNTY SCHOOL INSPECTORATES • To monitor the organization and functioning of the preuniversity education network and to inspect schools • To ensure compliance with the law in the organization management • To propose the local school network and the students’ enrolment plan to the Ministry of National Education. • To ensure, jointly with the local public administration, school attendance for the duration of compulsory education • To ensure that schools are adequately staffed with teachers in accordance with the law. 8

FUNCTIONS OF THE COUNTY SCHOOL INSPECTORATES • To guide the teaching staff’s in-service training and professional development, research work and other complementary activities • To ensure, jointly with the local public administration, the educational conditions as well as the development of the material resources in schools • To coordinate admission competitions and graduation exams • To monitor all pre-university educational activities and services provided by economic agents, foundations and associations • To coordinate and monitor the activity of the Teaching Staff Centre 9
