  2. 2. AboutPolystyrene•Polystyrene(Styrofoam) is anaromatic polymer;polymer is a mixture ofcompounds that isformed bypolymerization;polymerization is thechemical reactionproduced by monomerstyrene molecules toform polymer.
  3. 3. Dissolvingpolystyrene•Polystyrene isdissolved inorganic solvents,these solventsrelease the air inthe foamedpolystyrene.
  4. 4. Polystyrene in theenvironment•It is very slow tobiodegrade, so itpollutes theenvironment. It isabundant in theform of litter inthe environment,along shores andwaterwaysespecially in itsfoam form.
  5. 5. AboutGasoline•Gasoline is amixture ofhydrocarbons thatis sometimes mixedwith otheradditives such asethanol toincrease theoctane rating.
  6. 6. Organicsolvents•Organic solventsare carbon-basedsubstances thatare capable ofdissolving anothersubstance.•Many classes ofchemicals can beused as organicsolvents, such ashydrocarbons.
  7. 7. Gasoline as asolvent•Gasoline is anorganic solventbecause it dissolvesmaterials that areinsoluble or nearlyinsoluble in water. Ifpolystyrene is onlydissolved by organiccompounds,shouldn´t it dissolvein gasoline?
  8. 8. Researchquestion•Is there a way tohelp peopleimprove theirhouse quality byclogging holes inthe roof, and atthe same timereduce pollutionin the environmentusing usedStyrofoam?

HypothesisIf polystyrene (Styrofoam) isdissolved by organic solvents,and gasoline is an organicsolvent, then polystyreneshould start becoming a verysticky paste becausepolystyrene is made up ofpolymer chains, whosebounds are dissolved byorganic compounds such asgasoline. This solution can beused to clog holes indifferent materials andreduce the amount ofStyrofoam trash in theenvironment.

  12. 12. ProcedureAdd gasoline untilit covers all thesurface of thewater.

  14. 14. ProcedureWait until theStyrofoamdissolves.
  15. 15. ProcedureTake out thepaste and put itwhere you want it.You can put it in aplastic bag forlater use.
  16. 16. Results•The result is apaste that hardensin less than 24hours in normalconditions.•It isn´tflammable, so itisn´t dangerous.•This paste isresilient to water.

  18. 18. Other uses forthis product•This paste canalso be used toclog holes in pipesand paste thingsthat are made ofrock, ceramic andmetal.
  19. 19. Conclusion•There is asolution for theleaking problemthat poor peoplein Guatemala haveduring the rainyseason. Thissolution is thispaste, that canclog holes in theroof and otherplaces.
