  1. 1. Daniel Defoe Marco Cabrera English 102 (6pm) 1 July 2013 • Born in 1660 in London, England. • Died on April 24, 1731 in London, England. • Defoe was both a Journalist and an Author.

Quick background • Son of James foe and Annie foe. • His original name was Daniel foe, but later changed it to “Defoe” for a more gentlemanly sound • Graduated from an academy at Newington Green with the intent of becoming a minister. • Not long after his graduation in 1683 he published his first political pamphlet.
  3. 3. Defoe’s writing •Defoe continued writing political pamphlets up until the early 1700’s •In 1719 Defoe took a new literary approach and began writing novels. • During the mid 1720’s Defoe returned to writing editorials focusing on politics.
  4. 4. Personal life • There is little written on Daniel Defoe’s personal life due to lack of documentation. • He was imprisoned many times for his political works. • He was a merchant, fugitive, political spokesman, a soldier, but is most known for being an author. • Had over 100 pen names
  5. 5. Writing styles • He wrote over 500 works of writing on geography, politics, crime, religion, and many more topics. • Considered by many historians to be the first true novelist. • Many of his pieces often portray a criminal as the lead character.
