1. tween, tweeny. a youngster 8-13 years, considered too old to be a child and too young to be a teenager.
2. The concrete operational stage is the third in Piaget's theory of cognitive development. This stage lasts
around seven to eleven years of age and is characterised by the development of organized and rational
thinking.
Piaget considered the concrete stage a major turning point in the child's cognitive development, because it
marks the beginning of logical or operational thought. The child is now mature enough to use logical thought
or operations (i.e. rules) but can only apply logic to physical objects (hence concrete operational)
Children gain the abilities of conservation (number, area, volume, orientation), reversibility, seriation,
transitivity and class inclusion However, although children can solve problems in a logical fashion, they are
typically not able to think abstractly or hypothetically. (www.simplypsychology.org/concrete-

3. Inside tween’s brain:
 pre-frontal cortex maturing
 growing corpus callosum
 concrete operational stage
 myelenetion
 neuron pruning
4. Critical Thinking skills development is crucial especially in young adolescents/ pre-adolescents
5. Critical Thinking = Thinkng that questions itself.
6. In order to boost Critical Thinking encourage your students to:
a. Gather complete information.
b. Understand and define all terms.
c. Question the methods by which the facts are derived.
d. Question the conclusions.
e. Look for hidden assumptions and biases.
f. Question the source of facts.
g. Don't expect all of the answers.
h. Examine the big picture.
7. Tasks you could use to achieve that:
a. Compare and contrast: images/ texts/ videos
b. Find a scam in the spam.
c. Find a fad in the add.
d. Cause and effect activities
e. Use riddles and ambiguous stories
f. Facts vs opinions
g. Syllogisms
h. Venn diagrams
