DIUC: VISION <ul><li>By definition, the DIUC is the organism that regulates, plans, controls and administers the Development of Science and Technology in the UC. </li></ul><ul><li>Currently research at the University of Cuenca (UC) takes place around three main areas: (i) Social & Humanistic; (ii) Biological & Health; and (iii) Exact & Technological. </li></ul>

DIUC: MISSION <ul><li>Apply scientific knowledge to the social development of the region and country aiming at establishing a fair society characterised by equity and solidarity. </li></ul><ul><li>Promote the creation, preservation, development and transmission of science, technology, arts and culture through research. </li></ul><ul><li>Promote scientific research through own resources to finance projects/programs and form research groups that carry out national and international research activities  research lines that reflect society and institutional needs </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>Support the formation of postgraduated human resources for the University. </li></ul><ul><li>Contribute to satisfy specific requirements of ongoing projects through specialised courses. </li></ul><ul><li>Promote the participation of researchers in national/international external calls. </li></ul><ul><li>Promote the formation/participation of/in national/international thematic networks. </li></ul>DIUC: MISSION

COORDINATION / ADMINISTRATIVE <ul><li>Coordination section: in charge of administrative/academic activities, such as, assistance to project formulation, evaluation and management of projects  currently 1 person. </li></ul><ul><li>Administrative/Financial section: in charge of (i) administrative tasks and coordination of auxiliary personnel that collaborates with the DIUC  currently 1 person; and (ii) financial management of projects/programs financed by the DIUC and/or financed by external sources but directly executed by the DIUC  currently 1 person. </li></ul>

  16. 16. <ul><li>For every single purchase or payment process, I have to sign up about 5 copies </li></ul><ul><li>Excessive administrative load for the Director of the DIU and Research Council, which does not enable to the DIUC to focus on more fundamental research tasks/activities </li></ul><ul><li>For every time that a principal researcher does not register his/her physical presence at the university, I have to sign up a justification for HR office. </li></ul>DIUC: PROBLEMS  ACTUATIONS <ul><li>Regularising > 150 contractual situations with researchers  since June 2010 </li></ul>

  18. 18. <ul><li>Lack of scientific knowledge: PhD?; journals?; impact factor?; proposal formulation; scientific writing; ....... </li></ul>DIUC: PROBLEMS  ACTUATIONS <ul><li>Basic courses are to be taught to researchers/lecturers with very limited knowledge of basic scientific concepts. </li></ul><ul><li>Specialised courses are to be designed on the basis of particular requirements from ongoing projects and active research Groups  the VLIR project has already adopted this view of the DIUC and is organising a course at the moment. </li></ul>

  35. 35. <ul><li>The UC has worked systematically on the transformation from a lecture-based university to towards a research-based one </li></ul>CONCLUSIONS <ul><li>However, there is still much to be done, particularly to fulfil the LOES </li></ul><ul><li>In this respect, the DIUC has achieved important advancements but still lacks a significant improvement dealing particularly with re-structuring it and achieving connection with “Postgrados” and with the faculties </li></ul><ul><li>Thus, we are very much interested in what this project could help us with (in this regard) </li></ul>
