The role of a business development executive does not
necessarily require any specific formal qualifications.
However, many companies will expect candidates to
have some form of degree-level education in a subject
such as business or mathematics.

Apprentices and Juniors
Many of the people who end up in senior roles
in business development management begin
their careers as apprentices or at a junior le-
vel in sales or marketing before working their
way up the career ladder. At this stage, a Le-
vel 2 qualification can be undertaken. As more
industry experience is gained, higher-level di-
plomas can be undertaken in marketing and
sales, such as those from the Chartered Insti-
tute of Marketing.
Key Skills
Business development executives are re-
quired to demonstrate several key skills
to reach the higher echelons of the sector.
These include leadership skills that extend to
working with large teams of salespeople, ca-
pability with numbers and good social skills.
Other skills that will prove an advantage are
IT fluency, good communication, attention to
detail, in-depth industry knowledge, an ability
to keep up with current events, organisation
and time management.
