  4. 4. Major Parts and General Functions Organ / Part General Functions Oral Cavity Mastication Salivary Glands Lubrication / Digestion Esophagus Transport of food from mouth to stomach Stomach Churning and digestion. Secretion of HCl. Digestion of proteins Small Intestine Absorption of all nutrients Liver Prepares bile. Stores nutrients for further use. Metabolism. Gall Bladder Secretes bile, for digestion of fats. Pancreas Secretes pancreatic juice for digestion of carbohydrates. Large Intestine Absorption of water and salt.
  5. 5. Introduction Outline: • The system of the human body responsible for inhalation of Oxygen and exhalation of Carbon Dioxide. Major Functions: • Exchange of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide – Between external environment and body – Between the lungs and blood
  6. 6. Diagram Upper Respiratory Tract Lower Respiratory Tract
  7. 7. Parts and General Functions Organ / Part General Functions Nasal Cavity Moistens, warms and filters the incoming air. Pharynx Directs the air from nasal cavity to larynx Larynx Opening to Trachea. Produce sound. Trachea Channels the air into bronchi and bronchioles. Bronchioles Channels the air further to alveoli. Lungs Lungs transport oxygen into the bloodstream and to take carbon dioxide out of the bloodstream. Alveoli Exchange of gases between the air and blood capillaries.
  8. 8. Introduction Outline: • The system of the human body responsible for excretion of metabolic waste through urine. Major Functions: • Filtration of blood. • Removal of metabolic waste from blood. • Production of urine.
  9. 9. Diagram Upper Urinary Tract Lower Urinary Tract
  10. 10. Major Parts and General Functions Major Organ / Part General Functions Kidney Perform the essential function of removing waste products from the blood and regulating the water fluid levels. Nephron Structural and Functional unit of excretory system. The filtration of blood and production of urine. Ureter Transports the urine from kidneys to urinary bladder. Urinary Bladder Stores the urine. Urethra Passes out the urine from bladder to the outside.
  11. 11. Introduction Outline: • Blood is a specialized connective tissue that exists in liquid form and circulates in a well organized system of vessels in the body. Major Functions: • Transportation: – Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide and nutrients in the body. – Carrier of different hormones, proteins and enzymes. • Protection: – Fight against the invading disease causing agents. • Regulation: – Heat and fluid regulation. – Elimination of metabolic waste.
  12. 12. Components of Blood
  13. 13. Major Components and General Functions Major Components General Functions Plasma Fluid part of blood. Carrier of nutrients, hormones, proteins and enzymes. Red Blood Cells Contains Hemoglobin. Carries oxygen from lungs to all body tissues and fluids. White Blood Cells Provides the immunity to the body. Fights against the invading pathogens. Platelets Involved in blood clotting and coagulation. HEMOGLOBIN NORMAL VALUES Males 14 – 16 mg / 100ml of blood Females 12 – 14 mg / 100ml of blood
  14. 14. Introduction Outline: • The system of the human body that contains duct-less glands producing hormones necessary for the control, maintenance and regulation of various body functions. Major Functions: • Growth and development • Reproduction • Regulation – Body temperature – Metabolism – Body Fluids

  16. 16. Major Parts and General Functions Gland Location Major Function Pineal Gland Mid-brain Sleep patterns. Hypothalamus Base of brain. Fluid balance, smooth muscle contraction, memory. Pituitary Gland Base of brain. Master gland. Controls all other glands. Thyroid Gland Larynx Metabolic rate and Calcium levels in body. Parathyroid Larynx Calcium ion levels in body fluids. Thymus Center of chest Stimulation & regulation of Immune response. Adrenal Gland Above Kidneys Metabolic control, fluid & mineral balance. Pancreas Abdominal Cavity Blood Glucose regulation. Ovaries Abdominal Cavity Female reproductive functions. Testes Scrotum Male reproductive functions.
