How many people use social media and how?  It is estimated that 3.7 billion people use social media in one form or the other.  91% users browse social media on their mobile phones.  Millennials/ teens use social media the most, followed by Gen X youth.  Nearly one million more people start using social media every day.

Types of social media  Social networking is the biggest social media segment.  Video sharing, photo sharing, bookmarking, instant messaging are other forms of social media.  Blogs are an important social media segment.  OnWordPress alone, 70 million posts are published every month. (Wordpress is the most popular content management system for blogging/ website building. It now runs about a third of all websites.)  Content on blogs is found to be trusted more than content on other social media platforms.
  4. 4. Biggest social networks  Facebook is by far the largest social media network. It has 2.4 billion active users, equal to one-third of world’s population! It’s growth is tapering of late.  YouTube comes second with over 2 billion active subscribers.  Others are: WhatsApp (1.6b), FB Messenger (1.3b), WeChat (1.3b), Instagram (1b).Twitter is quite below with just 330 million (=0.3b) active subscribers.  Instagram is the fastest growing big social network.  LinkedIn, with nearly 300 million active users, is the biggest professional social network.

How much social media do people consume?  China (7b), India (3.5b), US (2.5b), Brazil (1b) and Indonesia (1b) have the biggest number of social network users.  On average, each social media user has nearly 8 accounts on different platforms.  Average time spent on social media is 2:20 hrs a day.  Video consumption is rising faster than text, images.  US adults spend average 1:16 hours each day watching video on digital devices.

How much does social media influence people’s decisions?  Social media ad spend has reached $93B in 2019.  In a recent survey, 91% of marketers said they use social media for marketing and most of them (75%) found it effective.  About 80% small/ medium enterprises use social media; about 90% of retail brands use 2 or more social media platforms.
  8. 8. contd…  Nearly three-fourths (71% to be exact) user of social media tend to recommend to others a product with which they were satisfied.  About 54% of the people who visit social media are found to use it for researching products.  About 49% of social media users were found to be influenced by recommendations on social media.  78% of people who complain to a brand via Twitter expect a response within one hour.

How does social media impact our lives?  Many sociologists say, social media hinders personal socialization.  Some studies have found social media to be addictive.  Teens are found facing eating/ sleep disorders, stress caused by poor image of self, depression, bullying.  81% of teens in a recent US survey said, social media helps them feel more connected to their friends; 69% said, it helps them to interact with a more diverse group of people.
