    4. 4. HOW TO BE A TEACHERLEADER The more a teacher learns, the more the students will learn. “Simply stated, teacher-leaders take action accepting responsibility for driving positive change in education.” “We teach you to plan so you can plan to teach.” Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. Teachers, not programs, produce student achievement.
    5. 5. HOW TO BE A TEACHERLEADER The more a teacher learns, the more the students will learn. Teachers in Survival Mode Reaching Mastery •“The surest path to stagnation is to do nothing or just get by.” •“The effective teacher thinks, reflects, and implements.” •Those who want a job to earn money and live on. •Those who want to make a difference. •They survive by making excuses. •The effective teacher thinks, reflects, and implements. •They are all the same. •They are all unique. •They cannot make a choice to plain their lives. •They choose to listen, learn, and lead others around them. •If the teachers do not want to learn, the students are not going to learn. •The professional educator is always learning and growing.

The basics for a beginning teacher The most crucial time for a new teacher is during the first three years. Successful teachers DO NOT QUIT!!! Successful schools stress practices because instructional skill is a major factor in improving student achievement.  To improve student learning, you do not change the structure, you change the instructional practices of the teachers. The effective teacher, even in an ineffective school, produces improved student learning an
    14. 14. HOW TO CREATE A CULTURE OF EFFECTIVE TEACHERS The most effective schools have a culture of consistency The greatest asset of a school: Human Capital: What people know (proficiency) and can do (effectiveness). Instructional leaders are the most effective administrators, coaches, and teachers. The only way to close the student achievement gap is to close the teacher instruction gap. Teach teachers well and they will teach the students well. Effective schools have a culture where they consistently invest in teacher capital.

    18. 18. HOW TO CREATE A CULTURE OF EFFECTIVE TEACHERS The most effective schools have a culture of consistency Now what? Find a school that has an induction program and a learning team Find a school that has a culture of proficient and effective teachers, predictable results, and consistency. The teachers hired today will become the teachers for the next generation. Our success will determine the success of an entire generation of students. What we know: • The effectiveness of the teacher has the single greatest effect on student achievement. • New teachers are not as effective as veteran teachers. • Teachers that work in isolation are not as effective as teachers who work as part of a learning team. • New teachers will succeed and stay if they are given training and support.
