  1. 1. Who should be in control of what kids eat?
  2. 2.  The National School Lunch program was introduced in 1945 Established to safeguard the health and well being of the nation’s children  In 2012 Michelle Obama led the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFK) - New rules banning certain food such as: Whole & 2% milk Provided smaller portion sizes  Michelle Obama’s main focus was to provide basic nutrition and help combat the nations child obesity epidemic
  3. 3. Students opposed the smaller lunch portions, and healthier food selections  Students in certain states began protesting against the new food standards  Students began boycotting the lunches being served refusing to eat the school lunches  Schools which were already faced with budget cuts were finding the new lunch standards were constricting their already tight budgets  Republicans felt that Michelle Obama needed to stay out of changing the school lunch program, and set out to put restrictions on her plans
  4. 4.  Government has been in control of school lunches since 1945  A program that has been around this long and working to provide lunches for kids while in school does deserve some attention to make sure that it is still effective.  Obesity is an issue with kids, and combating this issue within schools is a start  Schools should have the liberty to change the lunch program as they see fit, while still providing healthy choices, without being restricted by the government.
  5. 5.  Allowing the government to set strict restrictions creates oppositions on all fore- fronts  Changes to the NSLP creates tighter restrictions on school budgets  Allowing schools the chance to create their own nutritional guidelines could allow the schools to control their budgets.  Allowing children to choose healthier foods at school allows kids to learn a healthier lifestyle  Providing educational instructions to kids in schools should implemented as well.
