THE 10 BEST TIPS FOR
DRIVING TURNAROUND CHANGE
B2B Operational Excellence
AT SOME POINT IN YOUR
CAREER, YOU WILL BE
RESPONSIBLE FOR
TURNING AROUND A
FAILED PROJECT, TEAM,
DIVISION OR BUSINESS.
Tip #1
A shared sense of
urgency is critical to
transformation.
DON’T hide the
need to change.
Tip #3
NEVER worry about
what can’t be done,
only what must be done.
Tip #4
Be respectful of people.
Hindsight is 20/20 & nobody made
bad decisions on purpose.
Tip #5
Transformation requires everyone to be onboard;
great skills don’t outweigh a rotten attitude.
Tip #13
Personally thank the people who are
contributing to positive change,
hand write a thank you card.
Tip #16
Talkingabout vision is great,
but people need written plans
they can execute against.
Tip #18
Prevent indecision
---- it is corrosive.
Tip #19
Leadership in
charge when
things went wrong
can rarely turn
things around
themselves.
Tip #20
Empower and require people to fix problems.
They usually do fine and you can’t do it all alone.
Tip #21
If you have to do it more than once,
figure out how to do it right.
Tip #22
Say what you mean,
NO weasel words
or room for ambiguity.
People will appreciate it.
Tip #26
How you treat people
during layoffs will impact
how the remaining team
views you.
Tip #28 – Never be constrained.

  • Welcome
Thank you for the opportunity (Host and Audience)
    Where the tips come from
In our social media world people want to know BEFORE hand if they are going to LIKE something. This is a terrific way to help us know how to spend our time, and IMPORTANTLY it helps prepare us to get the most out of it. In order to help you get the most out of this talk lets cover two important things right up front
The hook – why you should care
Credibility – why you should believe what I am telling you is true
  • How do I know this? According to the 2010 US census 10.4% of the population has at least a masters degree – you are the leaders.

Projects and teams don’t fail for lack of technical talent, money, or market opportunity. They fail for lack of competent leadership.

Selling your idea - Who has read “Who moved my cheese” by Dr. Spencer Johnson? Opportunity happens in times of change – both internally and externally to the company. It really just depends on whether you are able to see the need, sell your idea, and execute quickly.

According to an informal poll done with about 20 business leaders, you will have 1 month to identify the need for a turn around, 3 months to get something going and 6 months to show progress.
  • Does anyone know what number we are on at the moment?

Right – I said that this would be the 10 best tips, and we are on #12…which brings us to the 13th and final tip <NEXT>
