  1. 1. QUARDRATICS QUERRY! 8 th Grade Enriched Mathematics
  2. 2. Purpose <ul><li>Previous to 8th grade, students have only been subjected to linear functions. The purpose of this project is to introduce curves on a graph and how it connects to real world application. It is to also allow students to become familiar with the history of quadratics as well as using the graphing calculator for representation. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Project Task <ul><li>Roller Coaster creators cannot construct a safe and exciting rollercoaster without considering the mathematics that connects with it. </li></ul><ul><li>Buffalo has opened up a new Amusement park to increase tourists, which then would increase money flow in the city. There has been a posting for a coaster project design that will be the park’s main feature (this means mucho money!). You jump at the chance to create your own roller coaster design so they then would offer you the job. Your coaster needs to attract millions of riders all over the world. </li></ul><ul><li>After researching roller coasters (using Google and Google Earth) and what the makers take into consideration while designing, before you design your own. You will create your coaster using your own quadratics. You will represent your coaster on the TI-89 calculator as well as your coordinate grid. </li></ul>

Important Dates/Key Ideas <ul><li>2 week project (1st day-Intro) </li></ul><ul><li>Day 2-4-Research history and coasters </li></ul><ul><li>Day 5-Calculator practice day </li></ul><ul><li>Day 6-9-project production </li></ul><ul><li>Day 10-presentations </li></ul><ul><li>Advancement on application of knowledge </li></ul><ul><li>Advancement on application on technology </li></ul>

Assessment <ul><li>Product: Pre-Assessment Written </li></ul><ul><li>Criteria: Make sure that the students have the knowledge to jump into the project. </li></ul><ul><li>Product: Verbal Assessment-Project (discussion) </li></ul><ul><li>Criteria: Listening to students talk with each other about their projects (ideas and procedures) to their coasters. Also, setting times to talk individually with each student for Verbal Assessment. </li></ul><ul><li>Product: Written Assessment (Project in full) </li></ul><ul><li>Criteria: Produce a project on the requirements based on the rubric previously given. </li></ul><ul><li>Product: Verbal Assessment-Presentation </li></ul>
