- 2. Steps in Solving Math Word ProblemsFirstly, do not to be overwhelmed by the number of words orthe amount of information when faced with some mathword problems. They can be primary or secondary schoolsmath word problems or even complicated college levelproblems. Half your battles are won if you approach theproblem with a confident and clear frame of mind. Teachersand parents should encourage confident and clear thinkingby introducing interactive puzzle solving, riddles, oral wordgames or casual discussions about questions. These willhelp to increase inquisitive and analytical thinking,especially if started from an early age.
- 3. Since different people take different amounts of time tofully comprehend a problem, regular practice is essentialfor the mastery of solving elementary math wordproblems. These are the steps you may follow:The first step is to read the problem to get a brief ideaabout the problem quickly. This is to determine the partsof the problem that are important, and those that areredundant. Assess the problem based on these factors. Thenext part is determining exactly what is required to bedone or what is needed to be done in the question. Forexample, determine whether the question demandsaddition, division, multiplication or division and whetherthe parameters, like age, height, or measure of a quantityis required.
- 4. Next step is to read the question again. But this time,analyze all the relevant information that can assist you insolve math problems . Decide on the appropriate methodsor techniques that have been learned. Check that units areused correctly and check whether the final answerrequires the same or different form. This should help toensure a better understanding of the problem and alsoavoids any careless or unnecessary errors in processingthe information.
- 5. Break down the problem into parts, and ask yourself whatis needed to get to the final answer. A problem is oftendivided into sub-parts which must be processed logicallyone part after another. Avoid jumping to conclusions andcarefully extract the relevant information to get goingwith the process.Once you have understood and gathered all the requiredinformation, solve the problem carefully by avoidingerrors in calculations and unit conversions. Check thatthe answer obtained is logical, in order to avoid anymisrepresentation. Very often, the calculation is accurate,but you may have put in the wrong unit or simply forget toadd one zero and so on. Look out for such anomalieswhile solving math word problems. When you follow thesesteps, in the exact sequence, you will definitely find itmuch easier to solve any Mathematical problem.
