  2. 2.   <ul><li>-The little ice age was a period of cooling that occured after the medieval warm period (the medieval climate optimum) </li></ul><ul><li>-The periods in which this occured was between the years 1550 AD and 1850 AD </li></ul><ul><li>- there were three particulary cold intervals, one at 1650, another around 1770 and the last one at 1850, each with an interval of slight warming </li></ul><ul><li>-In the summer of 1653, priests were using holy water to stop the advancing glaciers </li></ul><ul><li>- the little ice age was two to three degrees coller than todays temperatures </li></ul><ul><li>- weather instruments only goes back two hundred years </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul>
  3. 3.   <ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>-Human populations are alarmingly vulnerable to small drops in temperature </li></ul><ul><li>-40million to 60million peasants inhabitated Europe and their numbers grew dramatically during the warm period </li></ul><ul><li>-Average life span was 35 years old and infant mortality was high with 50% dead before the age of 1 </li></ul><ul><li>-Little Ice Age exposed all vulnerabilities </li></ul><ul><li>     -1347 was the bubonic plague &quot;Black Death&quot; (a million died) </li></ul><ul><li>     -1351 plague fades 51 million dead 1/3 of the population </li></ul><ul><li>-Witch trials in Euraop begin, Pope InnocentVIII decreed, cold climate was caused by witches </li></ul>
  4. 4.   <ul><li>-The little ice age ended the vikings explorations </li></ul><ul><li>-4000 vikings arrived in Greenland </li></ul><ul><li>-1000AD, vikings arrive and have grass for their livestock, cod for fishing, imported goods, and exports (walrus tusks, polar bear skins) </li></ul><ul><li>-they switched their dependence to sea creatures instead of lamb </li></ul><ul><li>-The viking became cut off from the outside world and eventually they starved </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul>
  5. 5.   <ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>- The potato became popular, was aka the &quot;devil's plant&quot; </li></ul><ul><li>-it was a sin to eat one </li></ul><ul><li>-For 200 years potatoes stopped starvation </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>-Stradivarious was born in 1644 </li></ul><ul><li>-he produced the stradivarious violin </li></ul><ul><li>-cold climate produced a dense wood with great acoustics </li></ul>
