1. ENGAGING THE 5 SENSES
TO LEARN ABOUT OUR
WORLD

2. ANALYZE THE LEARNERS
General: 1st grade, 20 students (9 boys, 11 girls), 10 Caucasian, 7
African- American, 3 Latino.
Learning Competencies: Students should have a basic understanding
of the five senses, and the body parts that help carry out the senses.
Learning Styles: A majority of the students are tactile-kinesthetic
learners. While there are a few who are visual learners.
3. MAIN OBJECTIVE
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the five senses by explaining
what each sense helps with, along with identifying the body parts that
help carry out the senses, through the use of online readings, videos,
songs, experiments, and optical illusions by the end of the week with
100% accuracy.
4. DAY BY DAY
1.I will show a short video that introduces the five senses. Then I will show a sing along video,
“Sight! A 5 Senses Sing Along”. Then I will present “KidsHealth’s” article on the eyes. We will go
over the eye diagram, and why sight is important. Then I will have them perform “Blindfolded”
drawing. We will discuss how our eyes can play tricks on us. Then, as a class we will observe
some optical illusions.
2. I will show sing-along video, “Ears and Hearing! A 5 Sense Song”. As a class, we will read the
“KidsHealth’s” article on the ears and hearing. Then we will perform the experiment, “What’s in
the box?”.
3. I will show the sing-along video “Nose and sense of smell- A 5 senses Sing-Along!”. Then I
will present “KidsHealth’s” article on the nose, and how it helps us smell. Then, in small groups
we will perform the “Smell Test.”
4. I will show the video “"5 Senses Song- The Sense of Taste!”. Then we will read the
“KidsHealth’s” article on the tounge and our sense of taste. The we will perfom the “No Saliva!
No Taste!” experiment.
5. I will show the video "Touch! A Five Senses Song.“ The we will read the “KidsHealth’s” article
on the skin and how we feel things. Then we will perform the “Feely Bag” expirement. Then we
will watch the “The Five Senses” video as a review of all the 5 senses.
5. USE OF TECHNOLOGY
Smartboard and computer will be utilized to show songs, videos,
and articles.
All the materials in order to perform experiments.
(Such as Sugar cubes, salt, crackers, sand paper, felt etc.)
