ZEBRA FISH: as model organism.pptx
1. Biological name: Danio rerio
2. small, fresh water fish
3. Commonly found in tropics
4. Native to south Asia (Nepal, India etc.)
5. Most common aquarium fish
6. Found in stagnant or slow-flowing water ( between 18 to 24
degrees Celsius)
7. Omnivorous
HABITAT:
The name Zebrafish comes
from the blue stripes that run
horizontally on each side of
their bodies.

MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERSTICS
1. About 6cm in length
2. Moderately elongated body
3. Mouth that forms slightly upwards and a
dorsally compressed head
4. Lack of oral teeth, but have teeth attached to
their fifth brachial arch consisting of dentine
layer, an enamel coating
5. Generally silvery white in color ( about 5
horizontal lines, blue in color)
6. Dorsal and belly part may appear pale yellow
7. Striped anal fin with between 10 and 12
branched rays
8. Soft dorsal fin with between 30 and 32
branched rays

Rounded belly, whitish in
color
More slender with golden in
appearance
Small genital papilla located
in front of the anal fin

LIFE CYCLE OF ZEBRA FISH
The following are some of the
main stages of the lifecycle of
a Zebrafish:
Unfertilized egg
Embryo
Larval stage
Juvenile
Adult
 Life span; 3.5 years some may live up to 5.5 years
 Can produce several hundreds of eggs per spawning
 Eggs are fertilized externally, zygotes are formed once the eggs are released
 Eggs are about 0.7 mm in diameter
 The fertilized eggs enter in embryo stage and then into a larval stage
 Larvae measures about 3mm in length, they are attached to a hard surface from
where they grow using nutrients from the yolk
 After 3 days they undergoes morphogenesis
 After 7 days they’re capable of moving its jaw even feeding and swimming
 At juvenile phase (2-10 weeks) they’re capable of eating small worms and
shrimps
 They reach maturity at about 10 weeks of age, once they mature they’re ready
to continue life cycle
