2. • The concept of SD (Bruntland Commission
1972) broadly means that the development
initiatives be initiated in such as way that the
future generations can enjoy the benefits of
nature without any compromise. We must
use the resources only to the extent to which
it is sustainable.
3. • SD is a concept. It underscores that rate of consumption or use of natural resources should approximate the rate at which
these resources can be substituted or replaced. It further requires that a nation or society is able to satisfy its requirements –
social, economic and others without jeopardizing the interest of the future generations. It is believed that countries of the
North (developed countries) use too many of natural resources and such practice cannot continue long. Nature is fragile and
finite. Experts have evidence that we have reached a critical threshold beyond which ecological decline would lead to disaster.
In other to develop the concept of SD, principle of justice and equity has to be followed between peoples of North and South.
Another aspect of sustainability is about systems analysis ie. how economic, social and environmental systems interact at
various scales of operations in a way that would lead to SD that strikes optimum balance between three sub-systems.
4. • In summary, SD is all about protecting the
environment and avoiding depletion of non-
renewable resources. It requires shifting from
reliance on one resource to another. Secondly it
refers to equity ie. Equal access to resources. To
pursue the concept of SD, inequality and poverty are
not to be ignored and the principle of
intergenerational distribution of resources should be
observed. A systems approach has to be adopted.
5. • The factors that promote SD are the following :
• Population stabilisation and health care
• Integrated land use planning and watershed management, ensuring availability of adequate area
for use as cropland, woodland and grassland for food, fuel, timber and fodder.
• Re-vegetating marginal land and greening the uncultivated area
• Water pollution control in rivers
• Air pollution control in industrial pockets
• Use of non-polluting renewable energy
• Waste re-cycling and reuse
• Conservation of biological diversity
• Human settlement without congestion
• Slum improvement
• Environmental education and awareness
•
6. • THE BRUNDTLAND COMMISSION
• Formally known as the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), the Brundtland
Commission's mission is to unite countries to pursue sustainable development together.
• The Chairman of the Commission, Gro Harlem Brundtland, was appointed by Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, former
Secretary General of the United Nations, in December 1983.
• At the time, the UN General Assembly realized that there was a heavy deterioration of the human
environment and natural resources.
• To rally countries to work and pursue sustainable development together, the UN decided to establish
the Brundtland Commission.
• Gro Harlem Brundtland was the former Prime Minister of Norway and was chosen due to her strong
background in the sciences and public health.
• The Brundtland Commission officially dissolved in December 1987 after releasing Our Common Future, also
known as the Brundtland Report, in October 1987, a document which coined, and defined the meaning of the
term "Sustainable Development".
• ‘Our Common Future ‘ won the University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award in 1991.
• The organization Center for Our Common Future was started in April 1988 to take the place of the
Commission.
