2. The Merry Cemetery ( Romanian : Cimitirul Vesel ) is a cemetery in the village of Săpânţa , Maramureş county, Romania . It is famous for its colourful tombstones with naïve paintings describing, in an original and poetic manner, the persons that are buried there as well as scenes from their lives. The Merry Cemetery became an open-air museum and a national tourist attraction. Il Cimitirul Vesel (letteralmente: Cimitero giososo o lieto o allegro) si trova nel paese di Săpânţa , nel distretto di Maramureş , nella Romania settentrionale. La principale attrattiva del cimitero è data dalla sua originalità: le tombe sono dipinte con scene di vita (a volte anche icone ironiche) della persona che vi è sepolta, accompagnate da una poesia umoristica che descrive il defunto. Questo cimitero è diverso perché i rumeni considerano la morte un momento molto solenne. Il cimitero è associato alla cultura degli antichi Daci , la cui filosofia si basa sull' immortalità e che considerano la morte un momento di gioia perché il defunto approda ad una vita migliore. Tutto è cominciato nel 1934 , quando un artista locale, lo scultore Stan Ioan Patraş , fece una decorazione per la sua futura sepoltura in legno di castagno . Oggi è un museo molto visitato. Le Cimetière joyeux se situe dans le village de Săpînţa , dans le Maramureş au nord de la Roumanie . Il attire les touristes par son originalité : des pierres tombales colorées, avec un dessin représentant une scène de la vie ou une occupation de la personne inhumée, accompagné d'un poème humoristique décrivant la personne. Ce cimetière est différent car les Roumains considèrent la mort comme un moment très solennel. On associe ce cimetière à la culture des Daces dont la philosophie se basait sur l'immortalité et qui considéraient la mort comme un moment de joie car la personne arrivait dans une vie meilleure. Tout a commencé en 1934 quand un artiste local, le poète Stan Ioan Patraş, a demandé que sa future sépulture soit décoré dans des couleurs vives, dans du bois de chêne. Aujourd'hui, c'est un cimetière très visité.

The unusual feature of this cemetery is that it diverges from the prevalent belief, culturally shared within European societies -- a belief that views death as something indelibly solemn. Connections with the local Dacian culture have been made, a culture whose philosophical tenets presumably vouched for the immortality of the soul and the belief that death was a moment filled with joy and anticipation for a better life The cemetery's origins are linked with the name of Stan Ioan Pătraş , a local artist who sculpted the first tombstone crosses. In 1935 , Pătraş carved the first epitaph and, as of 1960s , more than 800 of such oak wood crosses came into sight. The inscription on his tombstone cross says:
