What is PhD? • It is research degree, not taught degree. • To obtain a doctoral degree, you have to do an academic research for a period of time (normally 3-4 years) in very specific research area. • Research publication is required to graduate (normally in international journal) • Preparation before applying PhD program is important, not only to make sure that you can do PhD but also to minimize various challenges during your study. 6 important aspects before doing PhD • Choosing university • Choosing appropriate supervisor (and topic) • Applying research funding / scholarship • Preparing your research proposal • Preparing entrance exam (interview) • Family and health related materials

(1/2) • Reputation: • Quantity, quality, and frequency of publications (including quality of journals) • Patented research • Contribution and participation of academic staffs in international scientific forum • Research awards • Accreditation / Certification • Research group / prominent research area

(2/2) • Academic environment • Facilities (laboratory, library, internet connection, subscribed journals) • Academic environment (collaboration with research centers / industry) • Non-academic environment (city, culture, language, food, Indonesian community) Notes • If you have a chance to apply PhD program in a good university (check from Times Higher Education/THE ranks), go get for it. You will get good academic research atmosphere as well as exposure to wider networks of scientists. • Best practice: doing PhD in Europe will be easier for you to travel around to many conferences / workshop (during winter / summer school).

  16. 16. Important aspects • Administrative requirements: detailed preparation for desk evaluation is needed. • Give it your best shot. Try to exceed expectation of the reviewers. • Sort the documents carefully, mark them with sticky notes (try to make reviewer’s work easier). • Use checklist • Prepare supporting document to strengthen your position: certificate, award, letter of recommendation from professors, etc. Choosing university vs. 
 applying research funding • Defining your target university • Submitting application to obtain Letter of Acceptance • Submitting application of scholarship/funding • Some universities require you to obtain funding before applying PhD program • Language proficiency requirement (TOEFL, IELTS) and academic proficiency (TPA, GRE, GMAT) • Different period between submitting PhD application and getting its requirement.   18. 18. Notes on track record • PhD is a research degree. Track record in a field that you choose is a must. Otherwise, you will face difficulty to finish in three years. • How to create track record? • Collaborate early with other researchers, better in the targeted university. • Join a research student program (kenkyuusei) in Japanese universities. • Working on simplest topic, publish it in conference / national journal • Teaching some courses related to your research field help you to understand basic knowledge Key aspects in preparing research proposal Aspect What to do 1 To develop significant research problem Present previous works briefly and explain research gaps. Choose literatures that are published in previous 3-5 years. 2 To show originality of your research Present position of your research with regards to previous research works. Explain differences between your research and previous works. 3 To show significance of your research contribution Explain briefly how your proposed method can solve the research problem. 4 To show feasibility of your research Show that you have all technical skills that you need to solve the problem. Provide schedule / research plan

No specific clue. • Applicants should have appropriate knowledge about their research topic. • Examiner will look at your ability to solve the proposed problem. Sometimes you will be asked to explain a math formula, or every technical details related to your proposal. • Remember: examiner knows how to determine whether you are ready or not ready to do PhD.

 Notes: I used to study PhD and supporting my familiy with part time work (arubaito). Hard time, but I finally passed my PhD exam.
  21. 21. Prepare your health • Work-life balance is important • General check up is necessary • Identify your health problem earlier and try to prepare it under mental pressure

(1/2) 1 Apakah kandidat menunjukkan penguasaan yang baik pada bidang yang ia teliti? Sebagai contoh: bagaimanakah kandidat mengkritisi hasil penelitian sebelumnya? Bagaimana ia mengambil “gap” atau “celah” penelitian dari hasil penelitian sebelumnya? Apakah literatur yang ditampilkan di disertasi tersebut relevan dengan topiknya?
 2 Apakah disertasi tersebut membahas topik yang diteliti secara komprehensif?
 3 Apakah teknik atau metode yang digunakan memiliki alasan yang benar (rasionalisasinya pas)? Apakah metode dan teknik tersebut pas diterapkan untuk memecahkan masalah yang dihadapi oleh peneliti?
  25. 25. 4 Apakah hasil dari penelitian tersebut “pantas” untuk dipresentasikan (signifikan)? Apakah hasil penelitian tersebut didukung oleh bukti-bukti yang valid, ilmiah, dan masuk akal?
 5 Apakah kesimpulan dan implikasi dari penelitian (misalnya: rekomendasi dari peneliti) dikembangkan dengan pas dan relevan dengan kerangka / lingkup penelitian dan hasil penelitian tersebut?
 6 Apakah pertanyaan yang mendasari penelitian tersebut benar- benar diuji / terjawab dengan metode penelitian yang benar?
 7 Apakah tampilan dan kualitas dari disertasi tersebut sudah memenuhi standar penulisan disertasi yang ada ?

Laporan bulanan akan memudahkan mahasiswa saat tiba waktunya penulisan paper atau thesis. Dengan mengirimkan laporan rutin setiap bulanan, mahasiswa akan berlatih untuk mendokumentasikan penelitiannya secara rigid. Laporan disubmit setiap akhir bulan. Jawablah beberapa pertanyaan di bawah ini: Apa yang Anda pelajari bulan ini? Bagaimana perkembangan studi Anda? (Bahan yang dipelajari adalah referensi berupa paper atau buku teks, atau buku manual pemrograman. Sebutkan apa saja yang sudah Anda baca, apa yang Anda temukan dari bacaan tersebut, kelemahan apa yang Anda temukan dari paper-paper yang dibaca, atau metode apakah yang mungkin bisa digunakan untuk memecahkan masalah penelitian Anda).
