  4. 4. 1 BEN NICHOLSON (1894-1982) Still Life, Malcontenta (June 1962) Graphite on oil washed paper 13½" x 18" (345mm x 460mm) (Signed, dated and inscribed verso) Exhibited: I. Internationale der Zeichnung, Darmstadt ,1964 (ill. pg. 184) Provenance: Private Collection, Italy (purchased from Marlborough Fine Art, London in 1964) Notes: the original catalogue accompanies this work "[Nicholsons] drawings have mistakenly been viewed as somehow subsidiary to the paintings and reliefs, when in fact their qualities of wit, poetry, spontaneity and sheer virtuosity place them among [his] finest and most personal achievements." Peter Khoroche Published in Ben Nicholson: Drawings & Painted Reliefs (2002)4

"Necessity for compositional structure to run right through to the edges - disregarding identity of forms... not enough simply to balance shapes within the area. This is a subjectively obvious fact of which I have only just become conscious in words... the continuing lines are never obvious and are constantly interrupted by counter rhythms and thurst back and forth in space." Keith Vaughan Published in Keith Vaughan (2012)6

David Prentice Published in As Old As The Hills (1987)8

Inscape is a place of reality. Though I am deeply inspired by physical and pictorial form, the truth I want to convey is much more profound than this. I am more concerned with contemplation and sensational reality rather than with representation and the merely visual." Mark Barrow Fine Art represents the artists estate Roy Turner Durrant12
