Pizza originated in Italy in the 6th century BC as flatbreads baked with cheese and dates that were mostly eaten by Persian soldiers, though it was not truly pizza. Focaccia, a flat bread with toppings, was a precursor to modern pizza which drew inspiration from these early cheese-topped flatbreads.
