  2. 2. Denotation & Connotation <ul><li>We think of words in lots of different ways. </li></ul><ul><li>There are ways to think of the LITERAL meaning of the word. </li></ul><ul><li>Sometimes, we hear a word and it makes us happy or sad or angry. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Denotation <ul><li>The DENOTATION of a word is the actual definition of the word. It’s what the word means if we look it up in the dictionary. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Connotation <ul><li>The CONNOTATION of a word is what we think about when we hear the word. It might make us feel angry or sad or afraid or happy. </li></ul><ul><li>My feelings about a word may be different from yours. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Word Choices <ul><li>The words we choose can tell our audience how we really feel. </li></ul><ul><li>Think about these two sentences: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>She’s crazy about him. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>She likes him a lot. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Which do you think has MORE emotion? </li></ul>
  6. 6. Another thought… <ul><li>Think about this situation. Have you heard these two sentences before? Which one has more emotion? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>I want to see other people. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>I don’t want to date you anymore. </li></ul></ul>
  7. 7. Author’s Choice <ul><li>Authors of stories make very specific choices to get their audience to understand their TONE. </li></ul><ul><li>TONE is the author’s attitude about the subject of their writing. </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>If I am the author, and I really hate my friend’s dog, I might say I HATE THAT DOG. </li></ul><ul><li>But, if I wanted to be NICER about it so that I don’t upset my friend, I might say I PREFER CATS. </li></ul><ul><li>The second has a nicer TONE to it! </li></ul>
