- 1. Welcome To The Smart Grid Presentation So sit back ,watch and be informed….. We will have a few laughs, and we will go over some serious points too.. Please hold all your questions until the end… My name is Ben Martinez and I will be your presenter this evening… We will talk about why we need a smart grid, and what a smart grid does… I will also ease any fears and explain what a smart grid is NOT…. With that said…. LETS BEGIN!!!!
- 2. The Smart Grid Yes.. We need to save the earth.. There is a lot to worry about… Why we need a smarter grid To handle the current demand More reliability Affordability Efficiency Environmentally Friendly Stay competitive
- 3. Efficiency Did you know?? From 1988-98 electricity demand rose 30% while the transmission capacity only grew by 15%? Green house effect We have got to get more efficient now!! Pollution Even 5% makes a difference!! What can we all do right now to make this 5%?
- 4. Cost and Risk Cost is staggering every time we have a black out. Economic loss can cost up to 1 million for every hour. Did you know that we are charged for the maintenance of the infrastructure of our current grid? We are all charged a maintenance This fee contributes to 33% to 50% of our bill!!! UNFORGIVEABLE!! Here are some examples: Airlines = 90K Per Hour Cell Phone Service = 41K Per Hour Credit Card Machines = 2,580.00 an Hour And if you think that’s bad……….. Did you ever consider the other types of risks of a black out??
- 5. RISK Not only are we risking economic loss…. There are other serious risks!! What do you think happens during a black out?? Anyone?? Our country its self is at risk…. Basically we are sitting ducks for terrorists attacks!! While the government and SCE is setting up backup generators we are defenseless!! Thankfully.. New innovative ideas are on the rise.. Lets take a look at them!!
- 6. Environment We need to protect the earth The U.S alone is responsible for a staggering 25% of greenhouse gasses and only accounts for 4% of the worlds population!! Our reliance on coal is main cause of greenhouse gases. This is already having a profound effect on the earth in the form of natural disasters and the effect on wildlife will be devastating.
- 7. Competitiveness We are seriously falling behind other countries…. In fact we are beyond falling behind.. The average age of our transformers is 42 years of age. That is now two years older than what their life expectancy was ever supposed to be.. Your probably feeling a bit nervous about now…. Don’t worry there is hope! We have a sure fire plan that will knock your socks off! And.. Its not what you think…
- 8. What is a Smart Grid?? A collection of tools infused with smart technology that runs more efficiently . AMI and Verde are examples of smart technology already in development. With AMI technology there will be no more calling.. No more headaches! Ami and Verde work hand in together. This eliminates calls to the electric company to report outages.
- 9. Programs Working Together A smart grid enables programs to communicate with one another to give the fastest service possible.. A smart grid might look something like the photo on this slide. PRETTY COOL HUH?? This photo is a centralized communications system that optimizes all the programs helping one another
- 10. What the Smart Grid Is not.. There is nothing to fear about the new smart grid… It is just a step up from the old version that will quit wasting energy and peoples money. Don’t worry!! Were still light years away from robots and machines taking over the earth!!!!

- We need a smart grid because our current grid is already over extended and has reached its limit.A smart grid will have less impact on our environment.A smart grid will be more: Reliable, affordable, and competitive, will accommodate traditional and renewable energy sources, reduces the carbon footprint, and introduces advancement.Our current grid is the LARGEST machine on earth. It has more than 9200 electric making units connected to more than 300K miles of transmission line. The carbon foot print is so massive that people are FREAKING OUT! Our ozone layer is almost gone and pollution is through the roof. As a result it is failing more and more putting our country at risk. Demands exceed what the grid can handle by 25% every year. It is struggling to keep up.
- If we could get our grid just 5% more efficient, we could eliminate enough green house gas that 53 billion cars make!By replacing one light bulb to the new energy efficient kind, that would save enough energy to light 3 million more homes. This would save 600 million dollars annually! So turn off those tv’s, stereos, and computers when you are not using them..… Stop leaving your cell phone on its charger over night.. In fact anything with a clock takes up electricity while it is plugged in whether you are using it or not. So Unplug these devices and help the world.
- Cost & RiskJust 1 rolling black out cost 75 milion dollars in Silicon Valley. According to Sun Microsystems, a black out costs 1 million in economic loss every HOUR. Some examples: Airline reservation systems = 90K per hour Cell service blackout- Cost 41k, Credit card machines 2,580.00K per hour in lossThis gets the nation even further behind in national debt. The money saved could help pay off our nation’s debt or be used to produce more jobs, better healthcare, and nation security. Let’s focus on a few other reasons why we need this new system.

So where do we fall??
- What is a Smart Grid???There is not an easy way to define what a smart grid does in a simple sentence. According to Smart grid 101.org, it is a collective of tools and techniques infused with information technology to run more efficiently while maintaining a more reliable output while driving costs down.. Some technologies such as AMI and Verde are already on the rise. AMI detects problems on its own. Currently we are not aware if there is a problem unless someone makes a call first. Ami can detect problematic areas before hand.Verde provides grid awareness from a global perspective down to exact street location in a nano second.
- Programs Working TogetherBoth of these concepts are programmed to do even more than what is mentioned above. What we need is the ability to enable them all to work together. Thus creating a major smart grid.A centralized communications system in the center or central command station that optimizes and communicates with all the programs surrounding it.Don’t worry, when consumers hear terminology like smart grid, images of matrix eating machines with artificial intelligence comes to mind. Nightmares of robotic terminators also come to mind. Even with an automated smart grid in place we will still be light years away from machines taking over the world.
