Exalogic Hardware TopologyExalogic hardware is pre-assembled and delivered in standard 19” 42U rack configurations. Each Exalogic configuration is a unit of elastic cloud capacity balanced for compute-intensive workloads. Each Exalogic configuration contains a number of hot-swappable compute nodes along with a clustered, high performance disk storage subsystem. The hardware also includes a high-bandwidth InfiniBand fabric to connect every individual component within the configuration as well as to externally connect additional Exalogic or Exadata Database Machine racks. In addition, each configuration includes multiple 10 Gigabit (Gb) Ethernet ports for integration with the data center's service network, along with 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports used for integration with the data center’s management network. All Exalogic configurations are fully redundant at every level and are designed with no single point of failure.All device management ports are connected to your local data center management network using a Cisco Catalyst 4948 switch, which is a built-in component of an Exalogic rack. This switch offers 48 ports of wire-speed 10/100/1000BASE-T with 4 alternative wired ports that can accommodate optional 1000BASE-X Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optics. Reliability and serviceability are delivered with optional internal AC or DC 1 + 1 hot-swappable power supplies and a hot-swappable fan tray with redundant fans.
For illustrative purposes, this diagram shows InfiniBand connectivity on the vertical axis and Ethernet connectivity on the horizontal axis.The compute nodes and the storage device within Exalogic are provisioned with redundant InfiniBand connections. These devices have access to the datacenter “external” network via the Ethernet ports on the InfiniBand Gateways.Ethernet connectivity to the compute servers and cloud storage is provided through the InfiniBand fabric. Virtual Ethernet NICs are instantiated within the host stack and Ethernet frames are encapsulated within InfiniBand packets which are forwarded to the gateway, which has physical Ethernet ports.Note that there is an independent 1 GbE network for device management that connects to all components in Exalogic
